The 3X trim can now cover 381 miles between charges.
Even though it's been a few months since the 2023 GMC Hummer 3X trim was released, the manufacturer has announced the updated numbers for the 2024 model year, and they may make you rethink your order.
The 2024 Hummer EV Pickup 3X with the optional 24-module battery will now achieve a GM-estimated 381 miles of range, a 26-mile increase over the 2023 model. For models equipped with the Extreme Off-Road Package, the range increases to 359 miles, a 30-mile gain.
“For extended road trips, overlanding in remote areas, or daily driving, the 2024 GMC Hummer 3X Pickup will take you where you need to go, now with more driving range and confidence,” said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer of the GMC Hummer EV. “As we expand the limits on our all-electric future, we're excited to continue improving the range and to take the [Hummer] farther than ever for our customers and their adventures.”

The company hasn't said how it achieved these range gains, but whatever it appears to have worked, though we'll reserve comment until we've seen EPA-estimated figures. We imagine software updates were the primary source of the gain, but we wouldn't be surprised if Hummer put the pickup on a crash diet to lose a few pounds.
A teardown video of the vehicle showed the abundant use of steel in its construction, adding thousands of pounds to its weight. Steel is cheaper and generally stronger than aluminum, which benefits the Hummer in two ways. It keeps production costs down and makes the Hummer more robust overall.
Unfortunately, the cost savings are moot. Because the Hummer is such a heavyweight, equipped with the largest battery in a production car, it costs quite a lot to charge.

Even with these updates, the Hummer Ev still doesn't quite make sense to us. How many owners will fully explore the off-road abilities of their $100k truck? Most buyers will never take this behemoth down anything tricker than an agreeable gravel road because who wants to spend $6,100 to replace a taillight accidentally smacked against a small tree?
When CarBuzz drove it, we surmised it was for early adopters who want an EV to show off to their friends and be at the center of attention. In this regard, it excels, and if GM can continue to find more range for it, it can expand beyond this to an even more competent and compelling EV pickup.
