GMC Hummer claims an almost 530km driving range in EPA filing in the US.
The forthcoming Hummer EV will cover up to 529km on a charge, according to testing data that has been filed by its manufacturer General Motors with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The data referred to the pickup variant of the Hummer EV in limited-run Edition 1 trim, with a 212.7kWh battery. The EPA’s tests differ from the WLTP procedure used in Europe and applied to Australian cars, so the number isn’t directly comparable with models sold here.
The figure for the electric Hummer does surpass initial estimates for the Ford F-150 Lightning (370-482km), and the Rivian R1T with its standard 135kWh battery (505km). However, the Hummer EV appears to be far less efficient than the Rivian, which, when fitted with the larger 180kWh ‘Max’ battery pack, will cover over 644km, according to its maker. That’s likely due to the Hummer weighing over four-and-a-half tonnes.
The Hummer EV pickup is on sale and in production now, with the SUV version arriving in 2023. Both will be available in four trim levels: Edition 1, EV3x, EV2x and EV2. The Edition 1 is the only version available with the headline-grabbing 725kW power output from a three-motor setup as standard; this is sufficient for a 0-100km/h time of just three seconds.
Normally, the EV3x versions of the pickup truck and SUV, as well as the Edition 1 model of the forthcoming SUV, will have a total power output of 610kW, but retain their 15,600Nm of torque, also from a three-motor setup. GMC claims a 0-100km/h time in the region of three-and-a-half seconds in full-power driving mode for the SUV, and three seconds for the pickup truck. The less expensive EV2 and EV2x models of the Hummer EV will have up to 466kW and 10,000Nm of torque, using two motors.
Aside from the different roofs, the wheelbase of the SUV is also nine inches shorter than the pickup version, allowing for greater maneuverability and a tighter turning circle of 10.8 metres — which is smaller than a Mustang Mach-E’s.
The Hummer EV will also be available with an ‘Extreme Off-Road’ Package, which includes 35-inch off-road tires, improved differential locks, underbody cameras and underbody protection for rocky terrain. Excellent off-road capability was a focus for the Hummer EV development team, and among its suite of all-terrain features is a four-wheel steering system with a ‘CrabWalk’ mode that allows the car to move diagonally at low speeds over challenging terrain.
GMC’s parent company General Motors has developed its own ‘Ultium’ electric-car platform for this, the Chevrolet Silverado EV and other pure-electric models it plans in future, making the Hummer EV capable of rapid charging at speeds up to 300kW. The Hummer EV is also offered with ‘Super Cruise’ driver assistance system will also feature, promising “hands-free driving” on certain roads, as well as lane-changing assistance.
Reservations for the 725kW Hummer EV pickup Edition 1 are now full. The EV3x model will arrive in late 2022, with a starting price of $99,995 (AUD$138,000), followed by the EV2x and the entry-level EV2, which will start $89,995 (AUD$125,000) and $79,995 (AUD$110,000) respectively.
The Hummer EV SUV will launch in the US in early 2023 with an Edition 1 model, starting at $105,595 (around AUD$145,000), but will be available with the Extreme Off-Road Package, which will cost an extra $5,000.
While General Motors sells new models in Australia such as the Chevrolet Silverado ute and Corvette supercar via the General Motors Special Vehicles (GMSV) brand, we don’t expect either of the new Hummer models to be officially sold in Australia anytime soon.
The pickup version of the new Hummer EV will compete with the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Rivian R1T, Tesla Cybertruck, and Ford’s F-150 Lightning in the burgeoning electric truck market.
