Ford will finally launch the Mustang Mach-E electric vehicle in Australia – more than three years after debuting elsewhere in the world.
Due by the end of this year, the Mexican-built five-seater SUV will spearhead the company’s EV strategy on the passenger-car front, following the release of the E-Transit electric van next month.
No pricing has been revealed as yet, but going on what it costs in New Zealand (from $NZ79,990), the base Select model would convert to around $A75,000 – before on-road costs.
The Select will be part of three grades made available initially, that steps up to Premium and then the flagship GT. Using the NZ currency as a guide, these might cost upwards of $105,000 and $120,000 respectively.
Additionally, the Mustang Mach-E will be available for purchase online, opening up a new era for Ford Australia.
Powering the Select is a 71kWh battery pack, driving the rear wheels via a single electric motor making 198kW of power and 430Nm of torque. Ford says it delivers around 470km of range – “pending final homologation”.
Next up is the Mach-E Premium, with a 91kWh battery pack and paired with a single 216kW/430Nm electric motor; this is said to bring “close to 600km of range”, to make it the long-distance champion of the series for now.
The GT, meanwhile, also uses the 92kWh battery, and boasts dual electric motors to pump out 358kW/860Nm to all four wheels, for 490km of range.
The Mach E’s pricing is still yet to be revealed.Better still, it will streak from zero to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, making it one of the faster EVs available in Australia – as well as the quickest new Ford on sale right now.
Other GT features include adaptive dampers, performance brakes and the ‘Untame Plus’ sports mode that, amongst other things, improves acceleration, as well as proactively cools the battery and changes power outputs, stability/traction control intervention, brake force and AWD configuration to maximise “fun”, in Ford’s words.
Offering five-seat capability, the Mustang Mach-E includes a sunroof as standard, along with a 15.5-inch display screen and Ford’s SYNC4 voice-controlled multimedia system, as well as a 10.2-inch digital cluster, wireless smartphone charging and Bose audio with 10 speakers.
Inside is a 15.5-inch media screen and a10.2-inch digital cluster.More information, including final specifications, will be revealed closer to launch.
“We are thrilled to bring the Mustang Mach-E to Australia,” Ford Australia and New Zealand President and CEO Andrew Birkic said in a statement.
“It’s an exciting time for electric vehicles in Australia, and Mach-E gives us the chance to do what Mustang has done best for decades – put a smile on customer’s faces.
“We know Australians love that feeling of driving a performance car, and the Mach-E will mean they can enjoy that iconic Mustang freedom with all the benefits that an EV offers. There’s something special about the Mach-E that you can only really understand once you get behind the wheel.”
