We have a real love-hate relationship with automotive teaser images. On the one hand, they can give us an actual early look and even some details about models that will launch soon. On the other, they can be so cryptic as to be borderline pointless to even talk about. Hyundai's latest teaser is dangerously close to the latter. It's literally an image of a floating, roughly cube-shaped rock in a remote environment. Other than that, all Hyundai gave was a date for the reveal time. However, we have a guess (even a couple) as to what it might be. Hopefully, Hyundai doesn't disappoint.Hyundai It Might Be Truck Time Hyundai actually had a whole teaser video that showed the floating rock spinning, and various phrases appeared. The whole text is as follows:"Something big is coming. April 1. And it's no joke. Live at the New York International Auto Show. Tune in 9:55 am ET."—Hyundai teaserSo most of that is obviously just giving the date and time of the reveal. Plus, the mention of "no joke" is to clarify that, although the vehicle is being revealed on April Fool's Day, Hyundai isn't just messing around. As for this being "something big," well, that could mean many things. It could be that Hyundai is showing a vehicle that it isn't known for. It could literally be a big vehicle.HyundaiWe think it could be both, and that Hyundai is finally going to show the pickup truck it has been promising. Even after a few years of selling the Santa Cruz, Hyundai still isn't a company known for pickup trucks. The company doesn't even call the Santa Cruz a truck; rather, it's listed under the SUV category on Hyundai's consumer-facing website.Additionally, reports have said that Hyundai's upcoming pickup will be a midsize model with a body-on-frame construction, designed specifically to face off with established competitors like the Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado. That's a big departure from Hyundai's all-unibody lineup, and a big move to take on a segment with seriously loyal customers. It would also be a pretty good-sized vehicle compared to the brand's many compact models. Also, body-on-frame trucks are built to be tough and rugged. As Bob Seger would sing about Chevy trucks, they're built "like a rock." Plus, the companies that make trucks and their customers take their vehicles seriously, not jokingly. What we aren't expecting is a production pickup. Folks at Hyundai have said they're still at least a couple of years out from that. So our bet is we'll be seeing a concept. It will probably give us a good idea of what the final vehicle will look like, based on past Hyundai concepts, but we won't have much in the way of mechanical details.Hyundai There's Another Possibility While we're leaning toward Hyundai's big New York reveal being a pickup, we fully admit we don't have a lot to go on, and the teaser is very open to interpretation. So, our backup prediction is perhaps a more production-ready iteration of the Crater concept. A giant rock in the sky does conjure the idea of a comet or meteor, and the subsequent crater formed from impact. The Crater concept also looked like a serious off-roader that could take on the desolate landscape in the teaser. You could even argue its chiseled shape is a bit rock-like. How about you, though? What do you think Hyundai's bringing? Let us know in the comments.
