The performance SUV game is just that – it’s a game. A series of one-ups and ever increasing power outputs to see who can out perform who in a game of evening pub top trumps.
All in the name of science, of course, Mat Watson of Carlow has gathered some of the fastest SUV’s in production for a bit of a showdown – a Lamborghini Urus, a Tesla Model X Performance and a heavily modified Brabus 850.
With it’s 478 kW/850 N.m 4,0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 the Urus can catapult to 100 km/h in a smidge over 3,2 seconds. That’s mind-boggling, and there might even be a quicker one on the way when the updated Urus is unveiled at Pebble Beach later this =year.
As for the Brabus 850, its based on the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupé, however instead of being powered by the GLE’s stock AMG engine, Brabus have shoehorned their own hand built 6,0-litre thin-turboicharged Brabus V8 engine into the SUV’s engine bay. The outputs are staggering – 634 kW and 1 150 N.m – limited on order to protect the vehicle’s drivetrain…
The third contender, Tesla’s interesting Model X Performance features two electric motors for a combined 500 kW and 970 N.m, instantly available from 1 rpm. Will its instant torque be enough to get the jump on some of the fastest ICE SUV’s out there?
