Jake Dixon will remain in Moto2 for 2024 after he signed a contract extension with current team GasGas, the Spanish outfit announced on Thursday morning.
The British rider was heavily rumoured to have been MotoGP-bound in recent weeks, with MotoGP’s British TV provider TNT Sports – formerly BT Sport – keen to get a UK-born pilot into the premier class full-time, something that hasn’t happened since three-time MotoGP race winner Cal Crutchlow retired at the end of the 2020 season.
A berth at the Gresini Ducati outfit looked to be the most fitting for Dixon given that the squad looks set to part ways with the underperforming Fabio Di Gianantonio at the end of the year, though it seems he has elected to remain in the intermediate class for a further term to continue his growth and development.
“We’ve had almost two incredible seasons together so far so I’m really excited to stay with GASGAS Aspar Team for another year,” said Dixon – who secured his first Moto2 win at Assen in June – on his decision to remain with GasGas in the class for 2024.
“We both have goals, for the remainder of 2023 but then also full-on for 2024.
“We’ve regularly been in the running for podiums and wins and we’re third in the Championship at the moment, so I feel like I am in a strong place and the right place.”
Dixon’s decision to stay in the intermediate class next year – as well as that of fellow rumoured Gresini target Tony Arbolino who has decided to stay with his team Marc VDS in Moto2 for 2024 – leaves the Italian outfit with a dilemma.
Di Gianantonio could remain should he find some improved form across the rest of the campaign, while it is also thought current Repsol Honda man Joan Mir is eyeing up escaping from his contract to capture the satellite Ducati seat.
