Honda plans to add an EV to its legendary Activa family
Electric mobility is the future and to use this opportunity, we saw a number of brands hopping into the EV domain. After popular brands like TVS, Ola, and Bajaj, now Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India is expected to launch its first EV in the Indian market. This new electric two-wheeler might feature the Activa moniker. Here is everything you need to know about this new offering.
The Honda Activa is currently one of the best selling scooters in the Indian market
Atsushi Ogata, President at HMSI confirmed that the brand is considering launching its first EV in India by 2023. However, it is yet to be known if this new electric offering will be entirely a new product or a spinoff of one of the brand’s existing EVs in the international market. We all know that the Honda Activa is the best selling scooter in the country and entering the EV business with the Activa badge might give the brand a great start in this new domain.
A number of Honda electric two-wheelers are already on sale in the global markets
For now, the only Honda two-wheeler EV we have seen so far in India is the Benly e scooter that was spotted undergoing tests at ARAI. Benly e is primarily aimed to cater to the B2B or B2C market. Using its powertrain and other components for a commuter based electric scooter won’t be an issue for the brand and we might see something new based on this electric scooter.
The Honda electric scooter is also expected to feature swappable batteries and might offer standard ownership plans or subscription-based plans. In this scenario the buyers will get the option to buy a scooter with or without the battery, thus bringing the costs down in the latter case. If the buyers opt for subscription services, they will be required to pay a monthly subscription fee along with a fee every time they swap their battery at the station.
The Japanese brand also invested over Rs 135 crores in its battery manufacturer facility in India
With this trend rising every day, Honda has great expectations along with great plans for the EV sector. With a capital of Rs 135 crore, the brand has already set up a new subsidiary to manufacture battery packs in India. Registered in Bengaluru, this new subsidiary aims to cater to battery requirements of electric two-wheelers and electric auto-rickshaws. This will help them aggressively price their products in the market. With this being said, the Honda electric scooter is one of the most awaited launches right now and will offer a reliable and powerful package to buyers.
