According to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Ram 1500 is more reliable than the 2022 Toyota Tundra, which is a bit of a surprise. The Tundra has been the top dog in terms of reliability for years!
The predicted reliability rating is based on information gathered by actual owners. Consumer Reports sends out surveys to thousands of vehicle owners, allowing them to report issues in 17 potential areas ranging from the transmission, electronics, engine, power equipment, and more.
But Jake Fisher, Senior Director of Auto Testing at Consumer Reports, shared that the 2022 Tundra received a massive redesign, and new redesigns typically hurt reliability rankings. The current generation of the Ram 1500 emerged in 2019, giving it more time to tackle early production problems.
Does the Ram 1500 or Tundra have more severe problems?
Based on the Consumer Reports data, the 2021 Ram 1500 is being affected by issues related to the fuel system, engine, transmission, power equipment, in-car electronics, suspension, and climate system.
The issues were primarily reported for the 2019 and 2020 model years. The 2021 Ram 1500 has fewer issues, meaning that the problems may have been solved.
Also, the 2022 Ram 1500 had a recall due to an inoperable defrosting and defogging system. It may have reduced visibility for drivers in certain conditions, increasing the crash risk. The problem was taken care of with no cost for owners.
The most significant issues for the Toyota Tundra listed by Consumer Reports consist of the fuel system, climate system, suspension, and paint and trim problems. These are listed for the 2020 model, and the 2021 Toyota Tundra has fewer complaints.
It seems like the issues for the Toyota Tundra are a lot less severe than the problems reported for the Ram 1500. But the Tundra has new engines, electronics, suspension components, and more that haven’t been put to the test.
