If you’ve been interested in buying a full-size truck in 2022, there was only one clear choice. Consumer Reports recommended the 2022 Ram 1500 very early on, but never another model. Popular trucks like the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, and Nissan Titan failed to impress. However, there is one truck CR didn’t get the chance to review until now. We weren’t sure how it would rank among the competition, but Consumer Reports finally reviewed the 2022 Toyota Tundra, and it’s the second recommended full-size truck.

It took until halfway through the 2022 calendar year, but Consumer Reports finally recommends a full-size truck besides the Ram 1500. Although it’s recommended, the Tundra didn’t manage to outrank the Ram 1500. Moreover, the Tundra is just a few points behind the Ram truck for its overall score. Its highlighted by an equal predicted reliability and owner satisfaction rating to the class leader. However, Toyota’s truck fell short on the road test, giving the Ram 1500 the edge.
There is a lot to like about the Tundra, such as excellent acceleration. CR loves how quickly the standard 3.5-liter V6 turbo takes off. In addition, its truck capability is some of the best available. CR noted the towing capacity and payload to be excellent. More specifically, it can tow up to 12,000 pounds and haul 1,940 pounds if properly equipped.

For the 2022 model year, only the Ram 1500 earned Consumer Reports’ coveted “recommended” label. Fortunately, halfway through the year, the Toyota Tundra joined it at the top. CR rated plenty of other full-size pickup trucks, some of which are very popular. The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle for over 40 years, but it fell short of a recommendation. Additionally, probably the most popular model other than Ford’s or Ram’s truck, the Chevy Silverado, fell even further in the rankings.
Consumer Reports only placed the Silverado-equivalent GMC Sierra 1500 and Ram 1500 Classic behind the Chevy truck. Even the outgoing 2022 Nissan Titan managed a better review than the Silverado. We were chomping at the bit for another excellent full-size truck option. Finally, the 2022 Toyota Tundra gave us a second choice.
Ram 1500 vs. Toyota Tundra
Since they’re the only two recommended models, which one is better? CR likes the Ram 1500 better, and for good reason. It’s often compared to a luxury vehicle in terms of interior quality. Moreover, the ride quality and fit and finish are superior to every other model. Stepping inside the Ram 1500 feels more like a high-end SUV than a competent work truck. However, it’s outstanding that the full-size model can do that too. Towing up to 12,750 pounds is even more than the highly capable Tundra.
However, the 2022 Toyota Tundra is still worth a look. It was redesigned for the current model year and gained a standard turbocharged V6 engine and an optional hybrid version. The same engine paired with the battery-electric hybrid system is standard for the TRD Pro, and Capstone trim levels, optional for the rest. However, the base model is less affordable than the Ram 1500’s, starting at $39,695.

Which full-size pickup truck is right for you?
You’ll get an excellent overall model regardless of which full-size truck you choose. Consumer Reports only recommends the 2022 Ram 1500 and 2022 Toyota Tundra. Each one is highly luxurious inside, more than capable of towing and hauling and is filled with modern technology and amenities. An advantage for the Tundra is the optional hybrid powertrain for all trim levels, which improves fuel economy to 20 city and 24 highway mpg.
