One of the benefits of having so many experts testing cars, trucks, and SUVs is the wide variety of opinions. Such is the case with Consumer Reports and J.D. Power on the 2022 Toyota 4Runner sport utility vehicle. What did the experts say about this reliable Toyota SUV?
Consumer Reports had mixed feelings on the 2022 Toyota 4Runner

Consumer Reports puts each SUV through various tests to determine how reliable it might be for owners down the line. When it came to similar midsize SUVs with three rows, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner sat firmly in 10th place. The experts gave it a 55 out of 100 on the road test, noting it was “good for off-roading but not much else.” The 4Runner uses the dated body-on-frame SUV style, making it a bit clumsy when not adventuring off-road. The overall score came in at 61 out of 100.
The 4Runner excels off the beaten path. The highs noted include the off-road capability and the long reliability history that the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is known for. Some of the lows include the climb to get in, the low ceiling height, and the tight interior space for such a large SUV. The price increases quickly, and Consumer Reports wishes that more trim levels had automatic four-wheel-drive.
The overall reliability history is pretty good, though. It shows above-average scores for the overall reliability verdict back to 2002.
J.D. Power found a lot of positives in the Toyota 4Runner SUV
J.D. Power gave the 2022 Toyota 4Runner an 82 out of 100 overall. The quality and reliability score was an overall 81 out of 100, which isn’t bad. The 4Runner came in fourth place overall among similar sport utility vehicles with three rows. When J.D. Power asked the owners some of the high points, the owners noted the engine sound was a positive. The experience of playing audio was also a positive.
J.D. Power noted the overall fuel economy in the negative category. The lack of power from the Toyota 4Runner engine was also commented on, as were the safety systems.
Even though there seem to be some negatives associated with the engine in the 2022 4Runner, it isn’t clear what else made J.D. Power pick this score. The driving experience score came in at 76 out of 100, but the resale value came in at 91 out of 100. Toyota SUVs, in general, tend to have excellent resale value even many years down the line. In fact, Toyota is one of the brands known to make SUVs that last more than 200,000 miles.

Consumer Reports thinks the 4Runner has more to offer buyers than J.D. Power does when it comes down to it. It didn’t rank it quite as high, but the reliability score and predicted owner satisfaction show the SUV offers a lot. Those who might be interested in purchasing the 2022 Toyota 4Runner are probably more interested in the off-road capability.
