Consumer Reports didn’t love the Toyota 4Runner SUV
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner SUV on a city street | Toyota
Looking at Consumer Reports SUV rankings, you have to scroll pretty far to find the Toyota 4Runner. That doesn’t mean the Toyota SUV is a bad vehicle to purchase, but there might be better options (depending on your needs). The 2022 Toyota 4Runner managed to get a 61 out of 100 on the overall test.
On the road test, the 4Runner scored a 55 out of 100. Consumer Reports thought it excelled in the areas of predicted reliability and predicted owner satisfaction. Both of those were above average. The overall fuel economy came in at 18 mpg, which is relatively low even for an SUV of its size.
On the bright side, the overall reliability history for the Toyota 4Runner is above-average. It has four or five-star ratings back to 2003. The sport utility vehicle is competent off-road and utilizes body-on-frame construction. This is great for off-roading but not much else.
iSeeCars ranked the Toyota 4Runner in the top three of similar SUVs
Looking at the best midsize SUVs from iSeeCars, the Toyota 4Runner came third. iSeeCars gave it an 8.6 overall, with an 8.8 for the reliability score. It managed to get a 9.0 for value retention and an 8.0 for safety. When looking at the pros and cons, iSeeCars listed many of the same attributes that Consumer Reports listed.
The 4Runner is great for off-roading, towing (when properly equipped) and has a great resale value. The design isn’t the most modern or up-to-date, and the cargo space could be a bit more generous. The fuel economy is also about half of what similar Toyota SUVs can offer.
However, the Toyota 4Runner SUV can tow 5,000 pounds and has various off-road upgrades buyers can opt for. Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) is standard on all trims. Plus, it comes ready to use Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa.
Those looking for a reliable sport utility vehicle won’t be disappointed
Comparatively, the 2022 Kia Telluride was the best midsize SUV on the Consumer Reports list. It is actually one of the highest-rated SUVs that the experts have ever tested. iSeeCars hasn’t tested the Telluride yet but picked the 2022 Toyota Highlander as the best midsize SUV.
Critics and regular people alike all agree on one thing: The 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is one of the best sport utility vehicles on the market. And Toyota is known as one of the automakers capable of producing SUVs that can last 200,000 miles or more. The 2022 Toyota 4Runner won’t fit the needs of every potential buyer, but it checks the boxes for many people.
