Ever dreamed of building your own off-roader from the lug nuts up? Not just adding some suspension and slapping on a set of cool wheels and tires, but truly building your own vehicle? Probably, but such an undertaking is not exactly feasible for most. Unless you’re a full-time fabricator, you’re probably not machining your own stuff and smashing it all together into a running, driving vehicle. Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, or SCG, can get you closer to the do-it-yourself dream via its new off-road kit car, however. The company provides (almost all of) the parts, and you bolt ’em together. It counts; you and your buddies do all of the wrenching, creating something out of a pile of parts.
SCG’s off-road kit car is sure to confuse the daylights out of everyone, and you’ll surely be explaining your project every time you drive. It’s called the SCG 008, and it joins Glickenhaus’ SCG 003, SCG 004, SCG Boot SUV-ish thing, and SCG 007 cars. It’s part Glickenhaus Boot thanks to its lifted suspension and part 004 rally car thanks to its central driving position. The overall effect is a cross between funky and a Ferrari supercar, thanks to those swoopy fenders and overall sporty shape. It’s a bit of a confused off-road vehicle perhaps, but that’s what makes it fun.
The SCG 008 comes with everything* you need to get the DIY desert car dirt-ready: chassis, suspension, body parts, fuel system, vehicle controls, cooling system, and electronics. Horn, windshield wipers, headlights, turn signals—it’s all there. The CAD-designed, TIG-welded carbon steel chassis is covered by a complete fiberglass body. It has independent front and rear suspension; Fox coilover shocks and Eibach coil springs; and German 934 CV joints and 33-spline axles.
Inside, the steering wheel, racing seats, and seat belts are NGR pieces. An AEM digital display shows vitals. The necessary mounting hardware and fasteners for everything are included, along with complete assembly instructions to transform all the components into a rolling chassis.
Back to that aforementioned asterisk (*) above. The SCG 008 package comes with everything but an engine, gearbox, wheels, or tires. Glickenhaus has wheel, tire, and transmission options it will sell to customers, but the company won’t offer or provide an engine. Yeah, that’s a big asterisk to the whole deal, but if you happen to have an appropriate engine laying around and a good chunk of disposable cash, it could be a match made in heaven.
How much cash, you ask, for this homebuilt opportunity? The Bone Stock Founders 008 Package will set you back $99,995. A $1,000 deposit reserves the kit, and the company is taking reservations now. That is a lot of money, yes, but it’s also half the price tag of a complete Glickenhaus Baja Boot, which starts at $278,000. SCG will start shipping the 008 shortly after Glickenhaus races the new homebrew model in the 2022 Baja 1000 in November.
