Hyundai has been on quite a journey in the past few years, moving from being a predominantly budget-focused brand to one with plenty of strings to its bow.
The manufacturer has been quick to market with a range of new technologies too, so company-car drivers can now choose from hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric power in a range of different body styles and price points.
From small cars for the city to luxury SUVs, there’s real depth to Hyundai’s current line-up. And if you’re struggling to choose which Hyundai would best suit you as a company car driver, we’re here to help.
We’ve picked our top five cars from the South Korean brand and have listed them below. In each case, we’ve chosen our favourite model in the range for business users, and calculated the monthly tax bill for a 40% taxpayer. If you pay tax at 20%, just cut the benefit-in-kind (BIK) figure in half.

5. Hyundai Tucson

The Tucson is one of the most spacious and practical family SUVs you can find, and also hits the mark for company car drivers thanks to a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version that drops emissions to 31g/km for a big reduction in company car tax payments. If you can’t plug in at home to maximise PHEV efficiency, the Hybrid version has replaced the diesel as a good alternative.
The Tucson has dramatic front-end styling, and offers plenty of space for four adults while still giving you an impressive amount of boot space. The interior quality is a big step up from anything Hyundai has produced in the segment before too.
Ride quality isn’t up with the class best and it’s pricier than you might expect, but the Tucson is an efficient SUV capable of performing business duties during the week and taking everything the family can throw at it over the weekend.
4. Hyundai Ioniq Electric

Despite being one of the oldest models in Hyundai’s much-refreshed line-up, the Ioniq (not to be confused with the newer Ioniq 5, below) is well worth considering.
It was the first car to be sold in the UK with a choice of hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full electric power, and it’s the electric version that we think makes the most sense for company car drivers.
With an official range of up to 193 miles, the Ioniq Electric will cover most commutes with ease, and, like most electric cars, it’s no slouch when you put your foot down. The ride and rear-seat headroom could be better, but otherwise it’s a sensible all-rounder that’s cost-efficient to run (if one that’s showing its age against newer Hyundais).
3. Hyundai Kona Electric

Launched in 2018, the Kona Electric comes with a choice of two battery sizes. The smaller 39kWh option offered with SE Connect and Premium trim levels gives you an official range of 189 miles, while the 64kWh battery offered with the higher Premium and Ultimate specifications can officially do 300 miles. We recommend choosing the 39kWh to keep costs down, unless you really need the extra range.
A 2021 facelift sharpened the Kona’s looks, while equipment levels are good and performance is strong. Interior quality, space and ride comfort aren’t the Kona’s strongest suits, though.
2. Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe is our reigning What Car? Best Plug-in Hybrid for Big Families and is available with diesel and non-plug-in hybrid engines, as well as the company car tax-friendly PHEV recommended here. While the regular hybrid is our pick for private buyers, the plug-in is an absolute no-brainer for business users because of its low running costs (assuming you can charge it regularly).
The Santa Fe is only offered in Premium or Ultimate trim levels, so all versions are highly specced, and it’s a big and very practical SUV, with seven seats that are all suitable for adults – for shorter journeys at least.
The only real criticisms to level at the Santa Fe are that Ultimate trim takes the car into the price range of some very capable premium brand rivals, and there’s a bit too much wind noise at speed.
1. Hyundai Ioniq 5

Bold styling, huge amounts of space, great refinement and good charging speeds mark out the deceptively large Hyundai Ioniq 5 from its rivals. Not only is the Ioniq 5 the first model to come from a new sub-brand of Ioniq-badged electric cars, but it’s also the sister model to the Kia EV6 – the current What Car? Car of the Year.
Across its three trim levels, the Ioniq 5 comes with three power options – 168bhp, with up to 238 miles of range, 214bhp (298 miles) and 313bhp (285 miles). The most powerful model, which is temporarily unavailable because of a long waiting list, uses the same 73kWh battery as the 214bhp model, but has a second motor powering the front wheels, making it the only Ioniq 5 with four-wheel drive.
