An icon of the 1980s, the DeLorean, will be reborn this year as a new all-electric sports car.
That’s right; the DeLorean Motor Company has confirmed the automotive star of the Back to the Future movie franchise will get another generation more than 40 years after its launch.
However, in a sign of the times, the DeLorean will be making its long-awaited return with an all-electric powertrain, one which should be mid-mounted – if it’s to follow the layout of the original.
In a tweet overnight, DeLorean Motor Company – owned by British engineer Stephen Wynne and based in Texas – released a 15-second teaser video of the new zero-emissions sports car, showing off its signature gull-wing doors.
But this isn’t the first time the next DeLorean has been teased, as Italian design and engineering firm behind it, Italdesign, published a similarly darkened image last year, albeit with an illuminated ‘DMC’ badge instead of the full-width V-shaped light bar seen this time around.
In its aforementioned tweet, DeLorean Motor Company included a ‘DeLorean EVolved’ hashtag, which could hint at the name of the all-electric sports car. It also included a ‘Luxury’ hashtag, hinting the zero-emissions model will be an unsurprisingly upmarket affair.
Otherwise, the EVolved is shrouded in mystery, so we’ll have to wait and see just how far it takes it to the rivalling Tesla Roadster, Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija. Stay tuned.
