Ather Energy has officially announced that there will be a hike in prices for its 450X range of electric scooters starting from June 1. This decision is based on the subsidy reduction by the government, said the automaker in a social media post.
According to the post, Ather Energy announced that customers purchasing Ather 450X electric scooter before May 31 could save up to 32,500 before the reduction of FAME-II incentives from June.
Tarun Mehta, CEO of Ather Energy, reshared the post and emphasized the need for the EV industry to become self-sustainable and less reliant on government subsidies to foster its growth.
Mehta highlighted the government’s fluctuating subsidy policies for electric two wheelers, noting how the subsidy was initially announced at Rs 30,000 in 2019, doubled to Rs 60,000 in 2021, and reduced to Rs 22,000 in 2023.
The price increase decision follows the Ministry of Heavy Industries’ proposal to implement a 15 per cent subsidy for electric two wheelers, leading to a price revision for all electric two wheelers in India that previously received the subsidy.
The incentives provided by the FAME scheme have significantly contributed to India’s electric two wheeler industry’s growth. Apart from these benefits, buyers in some states are also eligible for advantages from their state’s EV policies, which reduce the initial cost of purchasing electric two wheelers.
A 3.7kWh battery pack powers Ather 450X, and the electric motor produces 8.31bhp of power and 26Nm of torque. The Ather 450X has a claimed range of 146km on a single charge. The price of Ather 450X starts at Rs 98,080 and goes up to Rs 1.28 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The Ather 450X comes loaded with features such as a 7-inch touchscreen digital instrument cluster with 2GB of inbuilt RAM, Google Maps, smartphone pairing, music controls, reverse mode, dual disc brakes, and a waterproof battery pack, and more.
Thoughts On Ather 450X Price Hike
Electric scooters have become popular in India, thanks to their affordability, low maintenance costs, and government incentives. With the FAME-II incentives being reduced and electric vehicle manufacturers increasing the prices of their two wheelers, it remains to be seen how the industry and customers will handle the consequences.
