While AR-integrated windshields are intriguing, it will be interesting to see if & how Apple actually pulls it off.
According to media reports, Apple has filed a patent wherein it plans to make use of the car’s front windshield to display augmented reality. The integration of AR tech that Apple is working on is expected to be less obtrusive if done correctly but also difficult to get right.
While many cars already come with a head-up display, Apple is taking AR one step further. The tech giant intends to place virtual, projected images over real-world elements. Reports state that while this is easy to do on an AR headset, it is very difficult to integrate it on a full windshield.
Apple itself says in the patent that it is extremely difficult to implement because of one major issue – parallax. Cars are driven by many people, all of whom have different heights, build and seating positions. The tech will have to account for a lot of this to get it right all the time.
