As predicted, Toyota is preparing an upmarket push to rub shoulders with luxury auto brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and even its own premium sister brand Lexus, with an all-new flagship SUV called the 2023 Toyota Crown – first images of which have now surfaced online.
While the new Toyota Crown emblem has already been trademarked in Australia, the images in question are design renders reportedly filed with Japan’s intellectual property office – sourced here from Design Watch.
They reveal an elongated wheelbase, vast overall length and, crucially, a fastback-style body we’re usually more accustomed to seeing on premium German offerings like the BMW X6 and Audi Q8.

Toyota’s take on the coupe-SUV, however, extends to more than just a sloping roofline; the Crown SUV’s silhouette is more akin to a high-riding sedan than a swoopy SUV and from the side it could be easy to mistake it for a tall Audi RS 7 Sportback.
Our sources say this isn’t just an outlandish design play by Toyota, but rather a tactical ploy intended to provide a clear link between the Japanese brand’s all-new flagship SUV and the new-generation luxury sedan on which it will be based.
While we’re yet to see any official images of the sedan, let alone the SUV, Best Car Web is reporting the sedan will ride on a 2850mm wheelbase and measure 4930mm long – roughly the same size as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Underpinned by Toyota’s modular TNGA platform, both the sedan and the SUV are expected to be powered by a familiar 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, as well as the newer and gruntier (274kW/550Nm) 2.4-litre turbo hybrid system seen in the new Lexus RX.
A fully electric version is also reportedly on the cards, but will likely emerge further down the track.
Cosmetically speaking, the 2023 Toyota Crown SUV will bare no similarities with the rest of the local Toyota portfolio if the patent images prove to be accurate, given the gaping lower intake, thin front lighting signature (full-width) and series of gentle flowing lines along its flanks, not to mention that obviously sleek roofline.

The car is yet to be officially confirmed by Toyota, but reports out of Japan are nominating a July 15 reveal.
Previous coverage has indicated Japan, China and the US are the primary markets for the new luxury crossover, but the recent trademark filings discovered by carsales point to a local introduction being on the cards somewhere along the line.
Given we broke the story, we’ll be sure to keep you updated with any developments.
