Chevrolet killed its long-lived Impala sedan three years ago. There wasn’t anything wrong with the expansive four-door, but crossovers and SUVs outsold the Impala enough to cause its demise. Fortunately, plenty of used Chevy Impalas are ready to impress potential customers with an exceptional swath of standard features. Below are the five most reliable Impala model years at least five years old.

1. 2018 Chevy Impala

The tenth-generation American full-size sedan features a comfortable ride, a cavernous cabin, and oodles of cargo space. The sedan segment may be shrinking due to electrification, but the Impala sits on top in reliability. According to CarComplaints.com, the only issues with the 2018 Impala are minor electrical snafus and problems with the paint finish.

2. 2017 Chevy Impala

Exterior gaskets, fading clear coat, and mediocre headlights are the most significant issues for the 2017 Impala. Despite larger roof pillars making seeing out the sides and back more challenging and a wheezy four-cylinder, it’s otherwise faultless.

3. 2016 Chevy Impala

In 2016, Chevrolet added Apple CarPlay and a wireless charging capability. Problems are kept to a minimum, but owners report various electrical issues. They range from electric power steering failure, hesitant acceleration, and even issues with GPS functionality. Regardless, the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) didn’t issue any recalls.

4. 2015 Chevy Impala

The NHTSA issued three recalls on the 2015 Impala. They include issues with the front occupant sensing system, a dragging electronic parking brake, and a failing console storage compartment latch. Therefore, nothing too significant. However, owners report repairs needed to the transmission and power steering system, typically above 50,000 miles.

5. 2013 Chevy Impala

For the 2013 model year, the Impala was largely a carryover and was the last retail Impala to feature a column-shifted gear selector and an optional bench seat. The NHTSA only issued one recall in 2014 regarding an ignition key that can get knocked out of place.

Which used Chevy Impala model years should you avoid?

Apart from the 2014 Chevy Impala, the sedan gets much better the more recently it was built. The tenth-generation four-door is the most reliable of all Impalas.

Regarding the model years to avoid, potential buyers should stay away from those built before 2013. The ninth-generation Impala has more issues across the car, but one of the big ones is the HVAC system. Usually an expensive fix, it’s also an annoying one in the summer months.

When was the Chevy Impala discontinued?

Related

Over the last decade, American auto customers have shifted from large sedans to larger SUVs and crossovers. While the Chevy Impala improved with age, it was an unfortunate casualty of changing market demand. It continued after the Ford Taurus went out of production in 2019, but the Impala was cancelled one year later. The final Chevy Impala left the Detroit/Hamtramck assembly plant in February 2020.

Chevrolet’s flagship four-door may be gone, but plenty of well-built used Chevy Impalas remain for potential buyers to scoop up. They’re an excellent pick for shoppers looking for a bargain. Autotrader shows that among the model years listed above, hundreds of examples are under 45,000 miles, hovering around the $20,000 mark.
