We’ve been spending a lot of time in off-roading trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss and the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. After carefully evaluating both options, we’ve found that the 2023 Chevy Silverado Duramax Diesel has crucial advantages over the 2023 Toyota Tundra Hybrid.
2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 vs. 2023 Toyota Tundra
Both the 2023 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss and the 2023 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro have advantages to consider. For example, the Tundra has an attractive interior with a massive panoramic sunroof.
Our Trail Boss model didn’t have a sunroof, but it features tons of practical storage solutions and a smooth power delivery. The Silverado Trail Boss with the Z71 suspension and Duramax Diesel engine for about $56,535.
The Toyota Tundra TRD Pro comes in at $69,420. That’s roughly $12,885 more than the Silverado. However, it does have more creature comforts, such as leather upholstery and ventilated seats.
1. The Silverado is more accessible

One advantage that the 2023 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss has to offer is accessibility. It comes with running boards to help compensate for the tall henry height.
It’s a little surprising that the Tundra TRD Pro doesn’t have running boards, but maybe they can be added. On that note, the Tundra doesn’t have tow hooks either. So, you’ll have to add them for the ability to pull others or yourself out of a ditch.
Plus, the Silverado has built-in corner steps on the back bumper, making it easier to step up and into the truck bed. With the available multifunction tailgate, you can turn the top part of the tailgate into a step and use a handrail to climb in. I can hold up to 375 lbs.
With the 2023 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, we had to pull ourselves into the back like seals. Also, the Tundra has seat organizers that take up space under the rear seat.
They can be used to organize your tools, and the rear seats fold up. However, a large bump in the floor prevents items from folding flat.
The Silverado has open space under the seat that’s large enough to conceal creates of water. Also, the floor is almost flat, and the rear seats fold up against the wall. Plus, the Silverado has plenty of storage trays and cubbies, including a cubby above the glove box.
2. The Chevy Silverado Duramax Diesel is more efficient
With big trucks comes an even bigger fuel consumption, but the 2023 Chevy Silverado Duramax Diesel could help with that. The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel cranks out 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque.
It was enhanced with new steel pistons, fuel injectors, a modified turbo compressor, and improved temperature control features to boost its power. It gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and up to 29 mpg on the highway.
While off-roading, we hovered around 16 mpg and got up to 22 mpg around town. It can travel over 550 miles on a single tank.
The 2023 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX Hybrid powertrain pairs a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor to generate 437 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 24 mpg on the highway.
We managed to get about 14 to 15 mpg while off-roading, which isn’t far behind the Silverado. But we couldn’t get above 15 mpg in the city and only got 20 mpg on the highway in Eco Mode.
The Tundra can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds, while the Duramax Diesel gets there in 7.0 seconds. The Tundra could be a bit sportier, but it doesn’t have more muscle. The Duramax Silverado can tow up to 13,300 lbs, and the Tundra maxes out at 12,000 lbs.
3. The Silverado Trail Boss has a more comfortable ride

The 2023 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss and 2023 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro might not have the best ride quality due to massive off-roading tires, heavy suspension upgrades, and a taller ride height. These features may contribute to more wind and road noise and a stiffer performance.
However, the Silverado has a quieter interior that’s a little more relaxing. Plus, you get an occasional deep roar from the engine. The Toyota Tundra has a bit louder on the highway and more intrusive.
The Tundra’s engine noises are popped into the cabin, so you never get a break from the loud rumbling. Plus, the Silverado has a tighter turning radius, making it easier to park and maneuver in tight areas.
But the Tundra TRD Pro does have a 360-degree camera to help navigate around obstacles. The Silverado has an excellent rearview camera and parking sensors, though.
Regarding seat comfort, the Tundra has an advantage with leather upholstery. However, the back seat feels more spacious and comfortable than the backseat of the Tundra.
Also, the climate controls in the Silverado are a bit more responsive to surrounding temperatures. It will heat and cool the cabin at a faster rate. We adjusted the controls in the Tundra more often than the Silverado.
While the Tundra has advantages regarding providing more tech and convenience features, it comes at a higher cost. The Chevy Silverado Duramax Diesel is more affordable, with more comfort, better fuel economy, and more practicality.
