The new special edition is joined by an all-new Performance Pack option.
Toyota has announced a few upgrades for the 2024 model year GR86, but the biggest news is the addition of the new limited Trueno Edition paying tribute to the original Hachi-Roku AE86 Corolla, which arrived on the scene 40 years ago. Only 860 units will be made available to the US market, and customers can order it with a manual or automatic transmission. It follows the footsteps of the 10th Anniversary Special Edition, also limited to 860 units.
The Trueno Edition is based on the top-spec Premium, and the most obvious difference is the throwback two-tone look harking back to the AE86, also known as the 1984-1987 Corolla Sport GT-S liftback. Toyota chose this particular nomenclature because the famous rev-happy rear-wheel-drive hatch was known as the Sprinter Trueno in Japan.
It quickly became a popular drift car in Japan and the model of choice for the Drift King, Keiichi Tsuchiya. The car's iconic panda-like exterior wasn't popularized by Toyota, but rather by the Initial D manga series.

The two-tone look is available in Halo and black or Track bRed and black. Other exterior enhancements include a black-wrapped hood, black Trueno Edition side panel graphics, and a black-painted duckbill spoiler.
Toyota adds more black adornments, including door handles, mirror caps, and 18-inch 10-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. Finally, the car gains Trueno badges on the front bumper lip and rear decklid.
Ultrasuede sports seats are standard, trimmed with red leather. The theme continues on the leather-wrapped steering wheel and red-stitched shift boot. On top of the shift knob, you'll find another Trueno Edition badge.

But all these cosmetic enhancements pale compared to the mechanical upgrades, which aren't just limited to the Trueno. These mods can also be retrofitted to 2022 and 2023 model year GR86 with 18-inch wheels.
For 2024, Toyota is introducing a new GR86 Performance Package, which is standard fitment on the Trueno. This package includes ZF SACHS dampers and Brembo brakes tuned by Toyota Gazoo Racing to balance ride comfort, handling, and braking consistency.
The dampers are filled with high-pressure nitrogen and oil to maximize ground contact while removing annoying vibrations. Brake-wise, you're looking at red-painted four-piston units at the front and two-piston units at the rear.

The 2.4-liter flat-four remains unchanged and produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque from just 3,700 rpm, solving the previous generation 86's biggest problem. It was an engine away from greatness. The new Subaru-built powertrain has its own issues, however.
Manual models also benefit from the Active Safety Suite, which used to be an automatic-only feature. As a result, even manual models now boast pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, sway warning, lead vehicle start alert, and high beam assist.
The Trueno will become available in limited numbers in the winter. The suggested retail price for the GR86 Trueno and the updated 2024 GR 86 will be shared later this year.
