Ducati decisions
With rising star Marco Bezzecchi turning down a potential switch to Pramac and staying at VR46 Ducati, Franco Morbidelli soon moved into pole position for the ride vacated by Johann Zarco.
Meanwhile, the second Gresini place, alongside Alex Marquez, is still to be confirmed amid shock rumours that Marc Marquez may be interested.
Johann Zarco joins LCR Honda
Johann Zarco will leave Pramac Ducati and take over the ex-Alex Rins seat at LCR Honda for 2024. The Frenchman was convinced to take up the Honda challenge by the offer of a two-year contract, with an option for 2026, compared with only a single-year extension (followed by a possible switch to WorldSBK) at Ducati.
Alex Rins moves to Yamaha
The only factory MotoGP team known to have a seat free for 2024 was Monster Yamaha, with Franco Morbidelli’s contract expiring at the end of 2023. Ahead of the British MotoGP, Yamaha confirmed that Morbidelli is to leave and be replaced by Alex Rins next season.
KTM conundrum
KTM extended Augusto Fernandez’s deal meaning all four of their current riders are tied down for 2024. But the factory needs to find a place for Moto2 star Pedro Acosta and has been exploring the possibility of adding more RC16s to the grid. Should that option fail, one of the current GASGAS riders might need to switch to a test and wild-card role.
Meanwhile, Brad Binder has extended his KTM contract until the end of 2026, becoming the first rider officially signed beyond 2024.
Honda woes
Marc Marquez has stunningly confirmed that he will quit Honda at the end of 2023.
Joan Mir will stay in the factory team. Takaaki Nakagami’s LCR place is also still to be confirmed but Rins’ exit means he looks secure.
