42 mpg for a compact crossover that can handle all daily driving needs is pretty darn good.
Toyota has announced official pricing and other important details for its 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid, a crossover that we were very impressed with following our recent test drive.
Set to arrive in dealerships this June, the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid will begin at a very reasonable $27,970 for the base S trim. That will get you standard all-wheel drive, 17-inch alloy wheels, an eight-inch touchscreen, a sport-tuned suspension, LED headlights, and Smart Key access.
Stepping up to the mid-level SE ($29,290) tacks on goodies like privacy glass, roof rails, paddle shifters, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert. The top-of-line XSE ($31,065) brings to the table everything on the SE along with 18-inch alloys, LED headlights, taillights, and fog lamps, SofTex-trimmed seats, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat.
The latter two trims can both be equipped with two-tone paint combinations ($500), such as Sonic Silver and Barcelona Red, each with a black roof. Interior color options include black and grey cloth for the S, and a black, grey, and blue combination for the SE. The XSE, as previously noted, comes with the SofTex material in either black or a black and blue combo.
Regardless of trim, all Corolla Cross Hybrids come standard with the new Toyota Audio Multimedia System which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and several USB-C charging ports. The system will receive regular over-the-air (OTA) updates.
Toyota is also tossing in as standard its Safety Sense 3.0 suite of active safety systems. Included on the list are pre-collision assist, lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. Interestingly, only the mid-grade SE can be equipped with the optional Moonroof Package ($940).
Only one powertrain is available and it's very impressive: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two motor generators that are good for a total of 196 horsepower. There's 139 lb-ft of torque courtesy of the gasoline engine and another 151.9 lb-ft from the electric motor, though these numbers can't be directly combined. The destination fee has not been announced, but it's fair to assume it'll be around $1,000, so factor that into your budget.
“Corolla Cross is an incredibly packaged vehicle and adding the hybrid powertrain to the lineup is truly the cherry on top,” said Michael Tripp, vice president of Toyota marketing. “Overall, Corolla Cross Hybrid is jam-packed with features and spec at a great price point that we know customers will love.”
The 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid represents outstanding value and it's a solid way for younger buyers to enter the electrification market. With its estimated 42 mpg rating for all three trims (official EPA numbers have not been released yet), the Corolla Cross Hybrid is surely another winner for Toyota – and it's manufactured at the jointly-owned Toyota-Mazda manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama.
