Stellantis unveiled the facelifted 2023 Ram ProMaster at the National Truck Equipment Association’s (NTEA) Work Truck Week trade show in Indianapolis. The updated van features a fresh and more appealing design while offering a new “super high” roof configuration. The van carries over last year’s technological updates, adding a few new features into the mix, and an EV variant announced for 2023.
The biggest news for 2023 is that the Ram ProMaster is finally getting the modern face that its European counterparts including the Fiat Ducato, Citroen Jumper, and Peugeot Boxer got back in 2014. The redesigned three-piece front end includes slimmer headlights positioned lower but still out of the low-speed crash zone, and a new Ram-specific bumper featuring a larger grille, plus a set of fog lights with cornering function. The redesigned front end also gets integrated steps for easier access to the windscreen.
The headlights are not only more visually appealing but also brighter with the standard halogen providing 29 percent more Lumens with a 15 percent more range, and the optional LEDs offering 70 percent more Lumens with a 50 percent more range.
The Ram ProMaster is available in 19 different configurations including four vehicle lengths, three wheelbase options, and three roof heights. The super high roof option is new for 2023, and adds 10 inches (254 mm) of extra headroom, resulting in “best-in-class” cargo volume and cargo height. Another new feature that will come in handy to those working on last-mile delivery is the available rear roll-up door made of anodized aluminum which makes loading and unloading easier.
Depending on the configuration, the ProMaster has a cargo length of 8 feet (2,428 mm), 10 feet (3,048 mm), 12 feet (3,658 mm), or 13.5 feet (4,115 mm), as well as a “best-in-class” payload of up to 4,680 pounds, and towing ability of up to 6,910 pounds.
Vans might be designed for work but customers are also interested in styling. Thus, Ram is introducing an optional Black Appearance Package in the 2023 range, featuring a black-painted grille, badges, and alloy wheels for a darker look. Alternatively, buyers can opt for a black machined grille or silver wheels, customizing their ProMaster. Finally, there are two new exterior shades including the Ceramic Gray and the Spitfire Orange.
Ram’s van got many interior updates last year so things look pretty modern inside the cabin already, with a 7-inch or 10-inch touchscreen on the dashboard. The latter incorporates the Uconnect 5 infotainment system which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Alexa In-Vehicle Assistant, and is compatible with over-the-air updates.
New for 2023 is the optional Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist feature that uses ultrasonic sensors to guide the driver in and out of parking spaces. Other optionally available ADAS include the Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, the Lane Keep Assist bringing Level 2 autonomous capability, and the 360-degree Surround View camera, upgrading the standard backup camera.
Under the bonnet, we find the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that produces 276 hp (206 kW / 280 PS) and 250 lb-ft (339Nm) of torque which is slightly detuned compared to its predecessor’s 280 hp (209 kW / 284 PS) and 260 lb-ft (353 Nm) of torque. The engine is exclusively mated to a nine-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, sending power to the front axle.
Besides the petrol-powered ProMaster, buyers will have the option of a fully electric variant coming in 2023 as a response to “strong customer demand”. Ram was coy on details but said that specifications will be announced at a later date, while confirming that Amazon will be the first customer using a fleet of thousands BEV ProMasters across the United States. The 2023 Ram ProMaster will reach dealerships in the third quarter of 2022.
