Whether you’re Team SUV or Team MPV, Toyota Motor Philippines thinks that the all-new 2022 Veloz is the ideal 7-seater for families seeking extraordinary adventures.
Now spun off as a separate model from the Avanza, the Veloz is Toyota’s response to the fast-growing 7-seater sub-compact SUV/MPV segment (its direct rivals would be the Honda BR-V and the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross). While it does share the same basic sheet metal, interior, and even running gear as the Avanza MPV, the Veloz gets unique elements inside and out to help it stand apart.
Outside, the 2022 Veloz has a different front fascia design. Inspired by Toyota’s line of “Cross” vehicles (the Corolla Cross and RAV4 in particular), it has a prominent hexagonal grille with Y-shaped inserts. It also has a more aggressive bumper design with the front fog lamps given more prominence thanks to chrome blade accents. The LED headlights may be shared with the Avanza, but here it gets sequential turn signal indicators.
Over to the side, the Veloz gets two-tone 17-inch alloy wheels shod with 205/50R17 tires. This increases its ground clearance to 205 mm—10 mm up compared to the Avanza. Complementing the ample ground clearance are some decidedly strong SUV styling cues such as the flush-type roof rails. It also gets black over fenders—a feature unique to the Philippine market.
At the back, the Veloz is differentiated by its full-width LED taillights giving it a unique aesthetic, especially at night. Toyota Motor Philippines is offering two grades for the Veloz—the 1.5 G and 1.5 V, but since the differences between these two variants are minimal, there’s no dedicated variant badge at the back.
Inside, it’s much clearer that the Veloz is pretty much based off the Avanza. That said, it does get a unique two-tone treatment as well as a soft-padded insert on the dashboard complete with a Veloz emblem and ambient lighting. The tilt/telescopic three-spoke steering wheel is covered in leather, while the seats are covered in a leather/suede-like combination.
The driver gets a 7-inch TFT color LCD screen and a digital speedometer combined a single cluster for a cutting-edge feel. Smart keyless entry with a push-button start is standard as is a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (8-inch in the 1.5 G and 9-inch in the 1.5 V). The screen also serves as the display for the Veloz’s standard rear camera (360-degree on the 1.5 V). A wireless device charger helps keep compatible smartphones juiced up with no need for cables.
Powering the Veloz is Toyota’s 1.5-liter 2NR-FE engine. Here, it generates 106 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. It’s mated exclusively to a D-CVT. Similar to its application in the Raize and Avanza, this system adds split gears to existing CVT belt drives for improved efficiency and response. The Veloz also gets added stopping power courtesy of its four-wheel disc brakes, while an electronic parking brake with auto hold helps make stop-and-go traffic less of a hassle.
Both the Veloz 1.5 G and 1.5 V carry the same equipment level down to safety with its 6 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, and stability control. The 1.5 V differentiates itself with its standard Toyota Safety Sense system. Here, it adds automatic high beam assist, forward collision warning with automatic braking, and lane departure warning. The higher variant also gets blind spot monitors with rear cross traffic alert.
The 2022 Toyota Veloz starts at P 1,185,000 for the 1.5 G, while the 1.5 V is priced at P 1,225,000. For both variants, the Platinum White Pearl Mica commands a P 15,000 premium. The three other colors are Purplish Silver Mica Metallic, Black Metallic, and Dark Red Mica Metallic.
