Corolla Cross vs. Crosstrek: On-Road or Off-Road
Corolla Cross
The all-new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is the brand’s freshest entrant to the hugely popular small-SUV segment. It joins models like the Nissan Rogue Sport, Subaru Crosstrek, Volkswagen Taos, and Kia Seltos.
The Corolla Cross features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 169 horsepower to the front wheels, or all four if you opt for all-wheel drive (AWD).
Three trim levels are offered: L, LE, and XLE. No matter which you choose, every Corolla Cross comes with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety features. This includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and more.
Anyone familiar with the current-generation Toyota Corolla will feel at home in the new Corolla Cross SUV thanks to the familiar dash, including the 7- or 8-inch infotainment screen, the shape of the climate controls, and the design of the steering wheel.
Crosstrek
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek will arrive at dealers in the first quarter of 2022 for a starting price of $22,445, or $23,570 including destination and delivery for a base model equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. With off-road, bad road, or inclement weather ability at the forefront of its mission, the 5-passenger crossover packs a lot of capability and utility into a small footprint — and a fairly small price tag.
A 152-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine in the base model is adequate but not especially powerful; the available 182-horsepower 2.5-liter upgrade engine is much more enjoyable and only 1 mpg less efficient, scoring 29 mpg combined. Those who want the 6-speed manual transmission will have to opt for the smaller engine, however, as it’s not available with the 2.5-liter. Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist system also is not available with the manual transmission but is standard on models with the continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Both engine variants are available with the CVT. The Crosstrek Hybrid plug-in hybrid offers up to 17 miles of electric-only range.
The 2022 Crosstrek’s range starts with the base model mentioned above, with the Premium the next upgrade trim, priced from $24,720 (all prices include delivery) with a manual transmission or $26,070 with a CVT. The Sport trim, starting at $27,920, is only available with a CVT, as is the Limited, which starts at $29,420.
The Crosstrek Hybrid starts from $36,770 and offers an upgrade package with the moonroof, navigation, Harmon Kardon audio, and a heated steering wheel for $2,500.
