Consensus: The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is aimed at the heart of the hugely popular entry-level SUV segment. With its affordable price, solid fuel economy, and strong standard feature set, the new Corolla Cross makes a good argument for your hard-earned money.

Above Average: Stylish looks; affordable pricing; roomy interior; good standard infotainment and safety tech.
Below Average: So-so performance from both engines; has a case of the jitters on rough roads; cruise control is available at extra cost.

Corolla Cross vs. Trailblazer: Compact, Funky, Fun
Corolla Cross
The all-new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is the brand’s newest entrant to the hugely popular subcompact SUV segment. It joins models like the Nissan Rogue Sport, Subaru Crosstrek, Volkswagen Taos, and Kia Seltos.
The Corolla Cross features a 169-horsepower 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive (FWD) or optional all-wheel drive (AWD).
Three trim levels are offered: L, LE, and XLE. No matter which you choose, every Corolla Cross comes with the impressive Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety features. This includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and more.
Anyone familiar with the current-generation Toyota Corolla will feel at home in the new Corolla Cross SUV, thanks to the familiar dash, including the 7- or 8-inch infotainment screens, the shape of the heating and air conditioning vents, and the design of the steering wheel.
Trailblazer
The Chevrolet Trailblazer is also a subcompact SUV with seating for five passengers. We think it offers substantial room relative to its tidy dimensions. There’s plenty of rear-seat legroom, and if you fold those forward you can carry upward of 54.4 cubic feet of cargo.
The Trailblazer portrays something of a rugged attitude with boxy design and elements like a faux skidplate, contrasting roof, and body cladding. The Trailblazer comes in front-drive, with all-wheel drive an option costing $1,500 to $2,000 depending on trim level.
If you were expecting a beefy 4-cylinder or a stout V6, you might be better off looking at one of the Trailblazer’s competitors or a larger SUV instead. That’s because, under the hood, buyers will find a base 1.2-liter turbocharged-inline-3 making 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque sent to the front wheels. A 1.3-liter turbo-inline-3 offers a bit more punch with 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, in addition to the option of all-wheel drive.
While the front-drive models include a continuously variable transmission (CVT), buyers may find the AWD model more satisfying to drive with its 9-speed automatic.
Similarities
Both offer similar fuel economy and cargo space, and both use CVT transmissions. Each also offers all-wheel drive.
Toyota Corolla Cross Benefits
Strong standard safety features; Reputation for Toyota reliability and resale value.
Chevrolet Trailblazer Benefits
Rear seat space; slightly more affordable base price.
Which One is Right for Me?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is the brand’s latest subcompact SUV. It’s more conventional than its sibling the C-HR and has a competitive feature set.
The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer’s fresh looks and solid safety and infotainment tech make it a strong competitor in the small SUV segment.
