A full-size sedan that exudes luxury but at a more mainstream price, the 2022 Toyota Avalon offers space, comfort, and a choice of engines. The standard Avalon has a 3.5-liter V6 that powers the front wheels only or a hybrid that returns 44 mpg on the highway.

The Avalon is all about providing a smooth ride, with the suspension absorbing bumps in the road so you don’t have to. The upper-trim Touring model, however, has a sportier suspension, as well as a Sport+ driving mode for more involved driving.

Inside, legroom is excellent in both rows, although a sloping roof compromises rear headroom slightly. The cabin is spacious, comfortable, and well made, with quality materials. Again, the Touring model is a bit sportier, and the Limited trim adds leather upholstery and wood trim, making the Avalon feel downright luxurious.

For 2022, the number of trims has been simplified to three only, with the base XLE still being well equipped. Standard features include keyless entry and ignition, heated front seats, simulated leather upholstery, and dual-zone climate control. A 9-inch touchscreen has Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, Amazon Alexa compatibility, Wi-fi, Bluetooth, satellite radio, four USB ports, and an 8-speaker audio system.

Safety features include forward-collision warning with automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Among the casualties in the slimmer lineup is all-wheel drive, which is no longer offered. Also gone is the sporty TRD package.

There’s a good reason that the Toyota Camry has been a consistent seller for its nearly 40 years of existence. It’s reliable, comfortable, and practical, with consistently good resale value. We wouldn’t call it exciting, exactly, but even that is starting to change.

A broad choice of engines is available in the 2022 Toyota Camry, from the base 4-cylinder to a 301-hp V6 and a hybrid. While the base engine isn’t exactly exciting, its 39 mpg on the highway is plenty respectable. The hybrid returns 53 mpg highway. If you’re looking for more thrills, the top TRD model not only gets its power from the V6, but it also has a sport suspension and front sport seats to keep you in place during fast cornering.

Most versions of the Camry are front-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive is an option. It’s worth noting, however, that all-wheel drive is only available with the 4-cylinder engine.

While the looks of the 2022 Camry are for the most part rather conservative, a couple of special models get a little wilder, including the new SE trim-based Nightshade Edition, with a black grille, rear spoiler, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The TRD (Toyota Racing Development) trim has an optional two-tone paint finish as well as a lower ride height and matte black 19-inch wheels to go along with its large rear wing.

Inside, the cabin is comfortable and airy, with good space for passengers. It boasts a freestanding 7-inch (9 inches on higher trims) infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, two USB ports, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and Wi-Fi. It also features cloth upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and a large suite of safety features, including forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic high beams.
