- The MG5 GT straddles between regular segments
- It is closer in size to a Civic, but priced like a City / Vios
- Very well equipped for its price
The Honda City and Toyota Vios in Indonesia will soon have a new stylish rival in the form of the new 2022 MG5 GT. MG Motor Indonesia has previewed the 2022 MG5 GT before its debut at the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) later this month.
Without getting too complicated, the new 2022 MG5 GT is a 4-door sedan that straddles between traditional segments. Its body dimensions are closer to a C-segment sedan like the Honda Civic, but its powertrain and prices are closer to a B-segment model.
The 2022 MG5 GT is 4,675 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,473 mm tall. It has a 2,680 mm long wheelbase.

Width (mm) | 1,842 | 1,748 | 1,802 |

Indonesia’s 2022 MG5 GT is expected to mirror the same powertrain as its Thai sibling. Over in the Land of Smiles, the MG5 GT is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine good for 114 PS at 6,000 rpm and 150 Nm at 4,500 rpm – putting the MG5 GT toe-to-toe with the City and Vios.
A CVT transmission with 8 virtual ratios is the sole transmission option, sending power to the front wheels.
Its stylish genes are evident both inside and out. Up front the MG5 GT get a gaping front grille, giving off a very in-your-face look. The MG5 GT also offers a sloping roofline, giving it a fastback-like impression. Definitely a big departure from the regular three-box sedans like the City and Vios. Subtle, it is not.
Steeping into the cabin and this is where the MG5 GT feels like a million bucks. There are two main digital displays: a 7-inch unit for the instrument cluster and a larger 10-inch unit that does infotainment duties. The latter also offers support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Elsewhere, the MG5 GT also offers a 6-way power-adjustable driver seat and a panoramic sunroof – features that you don’t often see on a sedan at this price point.
Speaking of price, our colleagues over at Autofun Indonesia mentioned that the MG5 GT for Indonesia could be priced between IDR 350 million (~RM 103k) to IDR 400 million (~RM 117k). For context, the Honda City is priced at IDR 359 million (~RM 105k) in Indonesia, as sedans are taxed as luxury goods over there.
