The hotly-anticipated 2022 Kia EV6 electric SUV will arrive in Australian showrooms next month, priced from $67,990 before on-road costs.
Twinned under the skin with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the EV6 range will open at launch with the entry-level, rear-wheel-drive Air, and top out with the higher-spec GT-Line, in rear- or all-wheel-drive guises – the latter of which becomes Kia’s most expensive model in Australia, at $82,990 before on-road costs.
Strong demand overseas means only 500 examples of the EV6 Air and GT-Line will reach Australia in 2022 – with Kia Australia stating it “is in continuous dialogue with head office … with hopes of increasing [the number]” – with the allocation to be spread out across the year.
The high-performance, 430kW/740Nm EV6 eGT will arrive in Australia in late 2022 or early 2023, with its own allocation of vehicles – click here for more details on that car.
Unlike the related Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 will be sold through Kia Australia dealers – with over 90 per cent of the dealer network “currently set up to sell and service EV6” – at negotiable prices.
All EV6 models in Australia will be powered by the larger of two battery packs available overseas, a 77.4kWh unit, mated to a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration in the Air and GT-Line, with the option of dual-motor, all-wheel drive in the EV6 GT-Line.
Single-motor variants are powered by a 168kW/350Nm motor on the rear axle, good for a 7.3-second 0-100km/h time, and 504km or 528km of range – with the higher figure achieved by the Air and its smaller 19-inch wheels (vs the GT-Line’s 20-inch wheels).
The all-wheel-drive GT-Line adds a second motor on the front axle, upping outputs to 239kW and 605Nm combined, slashing the 0-100km/h time to 5.2 seconds, but cutting the driving range claim to 484km.
Both models offer 800-volt electrical systems with 350kW DC fast charging, capable of a 10 to 80 per cent recharge in 18 minutes.
The Kia EV6 measures in at 4680mm long, 1880mm wide and 1550mm high, riding on a 2900mm wheelbase – a touch bigger than its Hyundai Ioniq 5 twin, pushing the electric Kia into the ‘large SUV’ class in Australia, also occupied by seven-seat family SUVs from the Toyota Prado to the Kia Sorento.
Standard features across the EV6 range – which starts from $67,990 before on-road costs – in Australia include dual 12.3-inch screens, 19-inch wheels, LED headlights and tail-lights, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, parking sensors.
A full suite of active safety technology is standard, including autonomous emergency braking with intersection support, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane following assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and traffic sign recognition, plus a centre airbag between the front occupants.
However, buyers keen on features such as heated (and ventilated) seats, a power driver’s seat, power tailgate, and seat upholstery without cloth elements will need to step up to the GT-Line, priced from $74,990 before on-road costs with rear-wheel drive, or $82,990 with all-wheel drive.
There’s no word on whether nationwide drive-away pricing will be offered for the EV6, as per other Kia models in Australia – though Drive understands further details will be announced at the car’s local launch next month.
Other additions bundled with the GT-Line include 20-inch wheels, a 360-degree camera with a 3D view, 14-speaker sound system, augmented reality head-up display, heated steering wheel, leather and suede seats.
The flagship variant also gains Blind-Spot View Monitor, which projects a camera feed from the side mirrors into the instrument cluster when the indicators are activated – and Remote Smart Park Assist, which allows the car to be driven in and out of a parking space from the key fob, with the owner standing alongside the car.
The EV6 GT-Line is roughly on par with the sole Hyundai Ioniq 5 variant in terms of features – but commands a premium of $3000 with rear-wheel drive or $7000 with all-wheel drive, due to its larger dimensions and battery (77.4kWh vs 72.6kWh), slightly more powerful motors, and Kia’s decision to fit the sunroof only with the all-wheel-drive variant.
Both EV6 variants support vehicle to load (V2L), allowing the car’s battery to be used for powering electrical devices – with the GT-Line adding an exterior V2L charge port, in addition to the interior V2L socket standard in the Air.
Snow White Pearl, Aurora Black Pearl, Runway Red and Yacht Blue colours will be standard on both variants – with the GT-Line exclusively available with Moonscape (grey), and the base Air with Steel Grey and Glacier. The vibrant yellow and green colours offered overseas aren’t available in Australia.
The 2022 Kia EV6 Air and GT-Line will arrive in Australian showrooms in February.
