After being revealed earlier in the year, the 2022 Honda Civic has gone on sale in Australia priced from $47,200 drive away. Now offered in a single highly-specced VTi-LX grade and only as a hatchback, the new generation Civic now sits towards the premium end of the market and no longer just competes with the Mazda3, but the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class too.
“The 11th-generation Civic represents a step-change for Honda in the small car segment, with the all-new model elevating key aspirational elements of the Honda brand such as craftsmanship, premium quality and intuitive design,” said Mr. Stephen Collins, Director, Honda Australia.
“On the eve of its 50th anniversary, Honda’s designers and engineers have taken the Civic to a whole new level, producing a car that is more advanced, more sophisticated and more premium than ever before.
“For Australia, the all-new Civic has been specified to appeal to a new target customer, one that aligns with the move to a more premium positioning for the Civic nameplate and the Honda brand overall.”
New for 2021, the 11th-generation Honda Civic has been well received in North America, where a fuller model range – including a sedan bodystyle and a hotter 150kW Civic Si that features a six-speed manual transmission – is offered. Launching solely as a hatchback this time around for Australia, the Civic is now made in Japan, unlike its Thai-made predecessor.
The 2022 Honda Civic measures 4,549mm long, 1,414mm tall, 1,800mm wide and sits on a 2,735mm long wheelbase – this makes it 34mm longer, 7mm less tall, 1mm wider and with a 35m-longer wheelbase than the previous Civic. Its boot measures a healthy 449-litres – 35L bigger than the last car, though that’s largely because the spare wheel has been removed for extra space.
Under the bonnet of the 2022 Honda Civic is the same 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as the current model. It makes 131kW of power (+4kW – though it rises further to 134kW using premium unleaded) and 240Nm (+20Nm) of torque, and is matched solely to a CVT automatic transmission in Australia. Honda claims that the Civic will use 6.4L/100km on a combined cycle.
Standard equipment on the 2022 Honda Civic VTi-LX includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, auto lights and wipers, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, satellite navigation, digital radio, wireless phone charging, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, synthetic black leather upholstery with suede inserts, eight-way driver/four-way passenger electric seat adjustment, heated front seats, keyless entry and start, heated and auto-folding mirrors, ambient lighting and an auto-dimming rear mirror.
Safety kit includes eight airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionally, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention monitoring, a 360-degree parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, auto high beam and traffic jam assist.
Just four colours are available (all at no extra cost): ‘Premium Crystal Red’, ‘Platinum White’, ‘Crystal Black’ and ‘Premium Crystal Blue’. Black is the sole interior colour option. Like other Honda models, the 2022 Civic comes with a five year/unlimited km warranty with five years of roadside assistance and map updates. Service costs are $125 for each yearly/10,000km service up to the first five years/50,000km.
