The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado is an updated version of the company’s flagship large pickup, while the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is an established and adaptable midsize pickup truck. Here’s how they compare.
2022 Chevrolet Silverado
2022 Chevrolet Silverado Starting Price: $32,000 (est.) | Price yours or View listings near you
Above Average: Restyled exterior; updated interior compares with rivals; innovative multi-camera trailering system; “off-road tough” ZR2 now available.
Below Average: No available hybrid or electric powertrains; ZR2 lacks the muscle of Raptor and TRX.
Consensus: This 2022 model update modernizes the Chevy Silverado’s exterior styling. Trim levels from LT and above introduce a new modern interior direct from GM’s line of full-size SUVs, which were all-new for 2021. Four engine choices are available. A jump in diesel torque has a max towing capacity of 13,300 pounds.
2022 Chevrolet Colorado
2022 Chevrolet Colorado Starting Price: $25,200 | Price Yours or View listings near you
Above Average: Three available powertrains include diesel, 2WD, or 4WD; choice of Extended Cab or Crew Cab; refreshed exterior; best-in-class towing up to 7,700 pounds.
Below Average: Can get pricey when loaded with options; lacks several standard safety features; slightly chintzy interior quality; Trailboss package may be hard to find.
Consensus: The Chevrolet Colorado is a great choice for a midsize pickup truck that includes drive qualities found in a contemporary crossover. Three powertrain choices and best-in-class towing with the 2.8-liter Duramax Diesel engine make Colorado a great choice for any truck shopper, especially those not needing a full-size pickup. Enthusiast-oriented Z71 and ZR2 trim levels boost off-road cred with their added rough-terrain capabilities.
Silverado vs. Colorado: Right Size for the Job
Chevrolet Silverado
The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado has been updated, a scant two years after this remade full-size pickup made its debut. This refresh changes the Silverado’s exterior styling and introduces a new modern interior ported over from GM’s line of full-size SUVs, which were all-new for 2021. The 2022 models will be released after the new year, while Chevrolet will continue to offer Silverado LTD models based on the 2021 model trucks.
The Chevrolet Silverado can be configured with regular, double, and crew cab choices. Then there are the cargo boxes: Short, standard, and long beds. Engines range from a base 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-4 with 8-speed automatic transmission, a 5.3-liter V8, a 6.2-liter V8, and the 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline-6 engine, all with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The diesel engine is the towing champ, having received an injection of power that makes it capable of tugging up to 13,300 pounds. Powertrains can be ordered in rear- or 4WD.
Chevy also adds a new off-road-oriented ZR2 trim. Among the upgrades on this model are off-road shocks from Multimatic, front and rear locking differentials, and revised bumpers and skidplates. The ZR2 rides on 33-inch all-terrain tires.
One thing that sets the Silverado apart from the others is the availability of GM’s “Super Cruise” semi-autonomous driving system, which in the case of the Silverado, has been calibrated to work while towing. Unfortunately, though, Super Cruise will only be available on the top-shelf Silverado High Country for 2022.
2022 Chevrolet Colorado
The Chevy Colorado offers a variety of powertrains, two cab configurations and cargo boxes. Colorado’s best-in-class towing of 7,700 pounds is achieved when outfitted with the 2.8-liter Duramax Diesel engine. A 2.0-liter inline-4 and a 3.6-liter V6 round out the gasoline engine offerings, with 2- and 4-wheel drive systems.
The off-road-oriented Z71 includes an automatic locking rear differential, an off-road suspension, hill descent control, and all-terrain tires. The new Trailboss Package is available for the 4WD variants of the LT and Z71 trims. Skidplates, a rugged appearance package, and a front 1-inch leveling kit are part of the kit, which is currently in short supply.
The Colorado ZR2 can handle rough terrain with a locking front differential, high-performance Multimatic shocks, 4-wheel drive, off-road front fascia, and a taller and wider stance for increased off-road capabilities. Buyers can get the ZR2 Bison Edition, which is a collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles. Ordering this optional package makes it even more off-road capable.
