2021 Toyota Fortuner Launched; New Turbodiesel Variant Available

Besides the Innova facelift, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has also launched the 2021 Toyota Fortuner for Malaysia, with updated styling, safety and powertrain choices. There are two variants of the Toyota Fortuner available i.e. Fortuner 2.8 VRZ (RM203,183) and Fortuner 2.7 SRZ (RM172,244).

The Fortuner 2.8 VRZ is a new variant to replace the superseded Fortuner 2.4 VRZ. It is a 4×4 that runs a 2.8L turbodiesel engine with 204 PS @ 3,000 – 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm of torque @ 1,600 – 2,800 rpm transferred to the wheels by a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting. This new 1GD-FTV 4-cylinder common-rail diesel engine features a heavy-duty variable nozzle turbocharger and intercooler. A balance shaft helps reduce vibrations and lowers noise levels while high efficiency is achieved with the electronically-controlled common rail injection system that can deliver fuel at a maximum pressure of up to 250 MPa. On the other hand, the Fortuner 2.7 SRZ 4×4 uses a 2.7L 2TR-FE petrol engine and the 6-speed automatic transmission, capable of churning out 166 PS @ 5,200 rpm and 245 Nm @ 4,000 rpm. The Fortuner is also fitted with Variable Flow Control (VFC) power steering which helps to improve fuel economy by reducing the power steering pump consumption torque. Toyota engineers have enhanced the steering feel to match the speed for better feedback. For the Fortuner 2.8 VRZ, there is also a SPORT mode which enhances the power steering for responsiveness.

Moreover, the Fortuner’s part-time 4×4 drivetrain provides for maximum capability on all surfaces, from smooth highways to muddy tracks. The shift-on-the-fly capability allows you to engage 4×4 via the rotary knob without needing to stop the vehicle. For stability enhancement, the drivetrain has Active Traction Control (A-TRC).

A new feature for the Fortuner 2.8 VRZ and 2.7 SRZ is the Auto Limited Slip Differential (LSD). This is very useful in very challenging conditions. LSD uses the traction control system to control braking when one of the rear wheels start to spin. It allows engine power to be maintained and power to be directed to the wheel with better traction.

The 2021 Fortuner’s looks has been given a more dynamic frontal appearance, especially the Fortuner 2.8 VRZ which gets Quad LED headlamps that flank a mesh-type front grille (the 2.7 SRZ uses Bi-LED). The other lighting units have also been restyled, as are the front and rear bumpers. The skid plate below the front end is also new, emphasising the ruggedness of the Fortuner.

Giving the Fortuner 2.8 VRZ a more distinct appearance is the blackened roof, A-pillars, wing mirrors and roof-mounted rear spoiler. Additionally, the corner mouldings are specially shaped for better aerodynamics. Both variants also wear 18″ alloy wheels with a new spoke design.

The interior of the 7-seater Fortuner 2.8 VRZ gets a trim design and colour along with new upholstery for a more premium look and feel. The new instrument panel also features a revised Multi Information Display (MID) opening animation. While ambient illumination is provided for a classy ambience at night.

For added comfort and convenience, the Fortuner 2.8 VRZ and 2.7 SRZ are fitted with LED interior lamps, electrochromic rear view mirror to reduce dazzle, and 8-way powered driver and front passenger seats. The three rows of seats can accommodate seven adults in comfort and seating arrangements are flexible to provide maximum carrying capacity. The second and third rows can be folded to provide more cargo volume. USB charging ports are also available for powering or recharging personal electronic devices.

The Toyota Fortuner boasts comprehensive safety equipment to help the driver avoid an accident, as well as a structural design that can reduce injuries during accidents. In line with Toyota’s efforts to reduce road accidents, the latest model comes with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). This is an integrated suite of active safety systems which makes use of a camera and radar to monitor and detect other vehicles, and to take appropriate action to prevent an accident.

TSS, though available in many current Toyota models, has different elements. TSS in the latest Fortuner comes with Pre collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), which are also found in the passenger car models. But unlike the TSS in passenger vehicles, the system in the Fortuner (and Hilux) has a Yaw Assist Function. This activates when lane departure is detected, and additional braking force applied to the inner wheels to direct the vehicle back into the proper lane position. The systems are also calibrated to take into account the usage conditions.

UMWT has also made options such as Wireless Charger (new), Kick Sensor Powered Rear Door (new), Roof-mounted Monitor and Rear Digital Video Recorder for buyers to include at the time of purchase.

There are six exterior colours to pick i.e. Medium Silver Metallic, Silver Metallic, Phantom Brown Metallic, Attitude Black, Super White II, and Bronze Mica Metallic (new). All are applicable for both variants except the latter two colours where the Fortuner 2.8 VRZ gets the exclusive Black Roof treatment.

The new Fortuner is offered with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, subject to conditions stated in the Owner’s Handbook, which is great for those who clock high mileage.

Besides this, customers will be able to enjoy longer oil change intervals for the turbodiesel engine with a Revised Service Package. The interval is extended to 10,000 km, or 6 months (whichever comes first), up from the previous 5,000 km / 3 months.
