1999 Chevrolet Corvette CONVERTIBLE
1999 CHEVROLET CORVETTE
The ’99 Corvette was largely carried over from the 1998 model. A new body style was added, the new Fixed Roof Coupe (FRC), detailed below. This is the first time ever that a Corvette was offered in 3 body styles. New options offered for the first time on the 1999 Chevrolet Corvette included “Twilight Sentinel” which turned on the headlights when it got dark (didn’t Cadillac do that back in the 60s?), a power telescopic steering column, and a Head Up Display (HUD) which projected the speedo and tach onto the windshield, hologram-style, allowing the driver to view them without taking his eyes off the road…or track.
A NEW ENGINE FOR THE 1999 CHEVROLET CORVETTE
Chevrolet knew the needed to dial more power into the 1999 Corvette in order to keep it relevant. Hood clearance/low hood profile was an issue, so tall DOHC designs were out. The answer was the next generation of Chevy’s venerable small block pushrod V8. The new engine, dubbed LS1, was launched in the relatively-low volume Corvette as a test lab, because it would usher in the next generation of GM V8s, and spill over into a wide variety of GM vehicles. It featured many new and innovative technologies, has developed into several later versions, in different displacements and outputs, all the way up to 7.0 liters (427 cubic inches) and up to 650 horsepower (in supercharged Z06 form). And it will continue to be the General’s weapon of choice for some time as it combines some very desirable factors that it’s higher-tech DOHC counterparts don’t have. First off, the small block V8 is the most prolific engine in history, so there’s plenty of working experience with them in all their forms. Second they provide great low-end power, which many DOHC engines don’t. But perhaps most important to Chevy at the time was it’s low vertical height. Without the cams up on top, the LS1 is much lower which means the hood can be kept low, for its aerodynamic benefits and for it’s good looks.

Chevrolet added a new body style to the 1999 Corvette lineup. The new Fixed Roof Coupe (FRC) was meant to be a lower-cost, lower-weight Corvette track car. In actuality. it came in just 93 pounds lighter than the standard coupe, and it was actually more expensive, although it came with more standard equipment.
