The development and production of zero-emission electric vehicle (EV) models is gaining significant traction in the automotive industry. In fact, most automakers are planning for full electrification before the next decade. However, electric vehicles are still a work in progress for some luxury car brands. Here are the 11 luxury car brands that currently don’t offer EVs.
1. Acura
Acura is yet to join the electric vehicle party, but the automaker is not ruling out the possibility altogether. In fact, plans are underway after the luxury automaker used Monterey Car Week to announce its electric plans. The big news is that the NSX supercar will be the first Acura to get an electric powertrain.
2. Alfa Romeo
The current Alfa Romeo lineup doesn’t include any electric vehicles, but that could soon change. Stellantis, which owns the luxury brand, plans to invest $27 billion in electric and hybrid cars over the next four years, according to CNBC. One of the first models to get an electric powertrain will be the Tonale PHEV, a compact SUV launched in 2022.
3. Buick
Buick is one of General Motors’ luxury brands but doesn’t offer any electric vehicles. However, the announcement of the Electra EV shows Buick is all in on electric cars. The all-electric SUV is expected to launch in 2023 and will have a range of over 300 miles.
4. Chrysler
The all-electric Chrysler Airflow concept | FCA
Chrysler’s commitment to electric vehicles is unclear, as the brand has yet to release an EV. However, the Stellantis brand is experimenting with electric cars, as evidenced by the Chrysler Airflow concept. The electric SUV concept provides a glimpse of what a Chrysler EV could look like. Chrysler has also pledged to go all-electric by 2028.
5. Fiat
Fiat is another Stellantis brand without any EVs in its U.S. lineup. However, that doesn’t mean the automaker isn’t electric vehicle friendly. In Europe, Fiat offers several electric models, including the 500e hatchback and the Panda Hybrid. Although electric Fiats are not currently sold in the U.S., a version of the 500e has been announced to arrive in America in 2024.
6. GMC
General Motors’ luxury truck brand, GMC, has no electric vehicles yet. However, that’s expected to change soon with the electric GMC Sierra Denali EV launch. The all-electric SUV will join its corporate cousin, the GMC Hummer EV, when it sells in 2024. It is estimated to come with a range of 400 miles.
7. Karma
Karma doesn’t offer any electric vehicles but has the GS-6 PHEV. The plug-in hybrid electric GS-6 has a class-leading EV range of 61 miles and an estimated fuel economy of 69 mpg. There are plans for an upcoming fully-electric GSe-6 that will set a competitive EV range benchmark with an estimated 300 miles of range.
8. Infiniti
Infiniti has yet to release an electric vehicle, but the luxury brand has announced plans for EV sedans by 2025. The Japanese automaker is expected to launch its first electric vehicle, an SUV, in 2023. The second electric sedan will come two years later and will be followed by a third electric SUV in 2025.
9. Land Rover
The iconic British luxury SUV brand, Land Rover, has a few PHEVs in its current lineup but no EVs. However, that’s expected to change soon, as the brand plans to launch six electric vehicles, with the first arriving in 2024. Its electric SUV will be followed by an electric version of the Land Rover Defender in 2025. This is part of Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) Reimagine strategy, which will see a zero-emission business by the end of the decade.
10. Lincoln
Lincoln, Ford’s luxury brand, has a series of PHEVs but no electric vehicles. Despite the lack of EVs, Lincoln has shown electric concepts that will give us a glimpse of the automaker’s electric future. A new report by Reuters suggests that the current Lincoln lineup will each get an electric variant by 2027.
11. Maserati
Maserati doesn’t have any electric vehicles in its lineup, but the Italian luxury automaker does have the electric GranTurismo concept. This electric sports car was first shown in 2018 and is powered by four electric motors that generate over 800 horsepower. There’s no word on when or if the electric GranTurismo will go into production.
