Are you looking for your next car to be better than your last? If you’re already a Hyundai owner, you know the South Korean automaker prides itself on affordable, dependable, and reliable cars. But like all automakers, Hyundai isn’t the best at everything in every segment. Take, for example, the growing market for hybrids. Only one hybrid Hyundai SUV appears on Consumer Reports’ recent list of top-rated hybrid vehicles. However, the fact that Hyundai placed at all when several automakers didn’t is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality.

In “Why Hybrid Vehicles Are a Smart Choice Right Now,” Consumer Reports outlines the benefits of buying hybrid vehicles to owners interested in reducing fuel costs but leery of EVs. As the nation continues to scale up EV charging infrastructure, many consumers are not yet ready to invest their hard-earned dollars in EVs, especially with above-average inflation. Even if the pricing premium people pay for EVs upfront weren’t an issue, many consumers have range anxiety and are fearful they might get stuck on a roadside somewhere if they drive an EV.
However, hybrid models provide on-the-fence consumers with the best of both worlds. They use conventional gasoline. But their batteries, most of which automatically recharge while driving, can help reduce fuel costs. For consumers unfamiliar with hybrids, Consumer Reports also put together a list of “CR’s Top-Rated Hybrid Vehicles” to get them started.
This shortlist of hybrid vehicles includes models from Lexus (NX), Ford (Maverick), Toyota (Highlander and the Prius), Honda (Accord), and, of course, Hyundai. Listed second is the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, a compact SUV offering an optional hybrid powertrain.

Consumer Reports isn’t the only publication recommending the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. Car and Driver reviewers have praised its striking exterior design that outshines competitors. In fact, with its solid performance and handling, refined ride quality, generous cargo space, and robust library of available amenities, the Hyundai Tucson earned Car and Driver’s Editor’s Choice Award for 2022.
Other automotive reviews offer similar praise. Edmunds ranks it second in the segment and notes its superior ride quality, vast feature selection, roomy interior, and gorgeous exterior. Autoblog also singles out the generous cargo space, noting it falls behind only the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 in that category.
(Also worth noting: The RAV4 has 37.5 cubic feet of space in its cargo area, which seems less than the Tucson Hybrid’s 38.7 cubic feet. However, the Hyundai does not have a spare tire; the RAV4 does, meaning it nominally has more space in its hold.)

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson comes in several trim levels, and the hybrid also has multiple variants. Hyundai offers the Tucson Hybrid with a starting MSRP of $29,750 for the base-level Blue trim. There are also the SEL and top-level Limited trims, available as pure hybrids or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). All hybrid models pack a 1.6-liter turbo-four, making 227 hp in the pure hybrid and 261 hp in the PHEV.
This powertrain can reach 60 mph in a respectable 7.1 seconds and accelerate smoothly. C/D notes the hybrid can get 38 mpg in the city and on the highway, and the PHEV gets 33 miles of driving range on electric power alone.
Inside the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, riders will find high-quality interior styling that feels more upscale than the starting price would suggest. There’s also a standard 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. A 10.3-inch version with navigation is an available option. And to add even more value, the Tucson Hybrid comes with Hyundai’s generous standard warranty: five years/60,000 miles for the basics and 10 years/100,000 miles for the powertrain. With these features and performance, the Tucson Hybrid is not only an excellent hybrid vehicle but also an outstanding compact SUV.
