The Polo Legend marks the end of the line for the Iconic hatchback in India
Volkswagen Polo did not enjoy volumes as high as its direct peers like Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai i20. But, it is the Polo that made Indians believe that a premium hatchback with German engineering prowess is acceptable with open hands. Volkswagen has decided to drop curtains on the production of the Polo and to give it a last hurrah, the carmaker has launched a limited-run ‘Legend Edition’ version of the hatchback. Only 700 units of the Volkswagen Polo Legend Edition are up for grabs.

For the limited-run Legend Edition version, Volkswagen has resorted to only a few cosmetic add-ons, which will be dealer level fitment. The list of add-ons for the new Volkswagen Polo Legend Edition includes a gloss-black wrap for the roof, gloss-black garnish on the boot lid, ‘Legend’ badges on front fenders and boot lid, black-coloured horizontal decals on the lower part of door panels, gloss-black finish for the rearview mirrors and a gloss-black roof spoiler.
Apart from these add-ons, there are no other visual changes or equipment add-ons in this limited-edition version of the Polo. Based on the top-spec GT TSI variant, it is on offer with the duo of a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol engine and a 6-speed torque converter. This powertrain promises a maximum power output of 110 PS and a peak torque output of 175 Nm.
The Volkswagen Polo Legend Edition retains all the features of the GT TSI variant, such as 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, and a multi-functional steering wheel with audio, Bluetooth and cruise controls, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. For safety, it gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.
12-year-old VW Polo now discontinued
Volkswagen Polo’s production finally comes to an end
Marking its debut in 2010, the Polo was the first-ever mass-market product locally manufactured in the German carmaker’s production capacity in Chakan. Since then, the Polo got cosmetic and powertrain updates to date, with no major generational changes in the entire duration.
While the Polo debuted with 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, more powertrain options like 1.6-litre petrol, 1.6-litre diesel, 1.5-litre diesel, and 1.2-litre turbo-petrol, 1.0-litre petrol, and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol were made available in subsequent years.
However, it largely remains the same car without any platform changes
In its last avatar, the Volkswagen Polo was on offer with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine in two versions. While the naturally-aspirated MPI version claimed 75 PS of power and 95 Nm of torque, the turbocharged TSI version promised 110 PS of power and 175 Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox was offered as standard, while a 6-speed torque converter was an optional transmission in the TSI version.
VW may bring the all-new Polo to the Indian market
The Volkswagen Polo remained the preferred choice of driving enthusiasts, especially with the GT TSI, GT TDI and 1.5-litre diesel versions. While Volkswagen already has the new-generation Polo available in other global markets, it’s nowhere in the plans for India due to cost constraints.
