Toyota has once again teased its upcoming GR Corolla hot hatch, but this time, its rear silhouette is shown at the end of a commercial for the new GR86 in the US.
While very little is shown, the reminder that the GR Corolla is on the way is likely an indication that the reveal for the anticipated hot hatch will occur in the near future.
So, what can we expect from Toyota’s Hyundai i30 N and Volkswagen Golf GTI fighter?
Power is expected to come from a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine, the same one fitted to the hot-selling GR Yaris, and although down one cylinder compared to its rivals, the GR Corolla should still be packing a sizeable punch.
In the GR Yaris, outputs reach a sizeable 200kW/370Nm, but rumour has it Toyota has managed to wring an extra 21kW of power from the three-pot for the larger GR Corolla.
Paired to the engine will likely be a six-speed manual gearbox, like with the GR Yaris, but Toyota has also recently confirmed a brand-new automatic transmission is in the works for the hot hatch that will broaden its appeal.
The number of ratios in the automatic transmission will be eight, and it will be a conventional torque-converter unlike the dual-clutch units used in the Hyundai i30 N and VW Golf GTI.
Either way, drive will be sent to all four corners, with tricked-out differentials also expected to me made available on the GR Corolla.
But when can we expect to see the GR Corolla land in Australian showrooms?
The reveal of the car will likely occur in the next few months, with an Australian debut likely late in 2022 or early in 2023.
It is important to note that the marketing and teasers have been primarily focused on the US for now, as that market does not have access to the GR Yaris, so expect to see the GR Corolla launch there first.
