Like the grunt of the Ram 2500 Power Wagon, but wish it didn’t compromise so much on towing? Ram sees you, and for 2023 is introducing a new heavy-duty trim: the 2500 Rebel.
Like the Ram 1500 Rebel, the 2500 Rebel fits a selection of cosmetic and off-road-ready goodies to toughen up the experience. Though not quite as aggressively Moab-prepped as the off-road-focused Power Wagon, the Rebel fits a snarling performance hood, underbody armour, a locking rear differential, and an available 12,000-pound synthetic-line winch for business or pleasure. Stepping above that Power Wagon, this 2500 returns the option of a 6.7-litre Cummins diesel twisting 850 lb-ft, all good for a maximum trailer haul of up to 16,870 lbs.
Our Jil McIntosh recently reviewed the 2500 Rebel in California, and you can read her full written assessment here on Driving. As you’ll see in this video review through a snowy off-road route near Ottawa, our impressions are quite similar. The Ram 2500 Rebel is a force not to be taken lightly.
The 2500 Rebel offers plenty more goodies, but perhaps the largest news here is its surprisingly compelling value. Available from $77,545 including delivery, this Rebel’s price tag is comparable to that of a well-equipped Ram 1500 — but with loads greater capability. This is not to suggest that average lifestyle pickup-truckers should consider it as an alternative to the already-large Ram 1500, but it does soften the blow for those whose work or farm needs require them to step up into the big leagues — and who’d like to have some stylish fun while they’re at it.
