Advancement in technology is happening at a rapid pace, and the automotive industry is no different. Many luxury automakers are now moving toward electrification, with PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) models as a stepping stone to EVs (electric vehicles). Unfortunately, not all luxury automakers have caught up with this trend. Some are moving at a slow pace, while others have skipped PHEVs altogether in favor of EVs. Here are 12 luxury automakers that currently don’t offer any PHEV model.

1. Acura

Precision-crafted performance is what Acura is all about, and they have been working hard to bring electrification to their lineup. However, the automaker has decided to skip hybrids and PHEVs products and focus on fully electric vehicles instead. This puts an end to the production of its popular mid-engined performance machine, the NSX Type S. In a press release by AcuraNews, Acura plans to launch its first dynamically styled all-electric SUV in early 2024.

2. Alfa Romeo

2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce | FCA

In its long history, Alfa Romeo has never offered a PHEV model. Fortunately, the automaker does have a PHEV in the works. The Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV is an upcoming compact crossover SUV that will be the automaker’s first PHEV offering. A recent review by Forbes Wheels suggests that Tonale will debut overseas in 2022 and arrive in the U.S. by the first quarter of 2023.

3. Buick

While Buick does not have any PHEVs in its current lineup, a new transformation has already started with the all-new Buick Electra. Buick’s first EV will be available in North America in 2024. Additionally, there are plans to have an all-electric lineup in the U.S. and Canada by 2030.

4. Cadillac

Cadillac has been a pioneer in the luxury automotive industry and has been offering PHEVs since 2016. The automaker once offered the Cadillac CT6 Plug-in, a full-size luxury car. However, the CT6 Plug-in was discontinued in 2018, and Cadillac has no PHEV in its current lineup. Instead, the automaker is focusing on its all-new Lyriq SUV, set to be released in 2023.

5. Fiat

Fiat is an Italian automaker that has a long history of producing PHEVs. However, the automaker does not offer any PHEVs in the North American market. In Europe, Fiat offers the 500e, a small electric hatchback, and the 500X, a small crossover SUV. While no PHEVs are on their way to America, Fiat has announced plans to finally bring the 500e to the U.S. in 2024.

6. Genesis

Genesis is a luxury automaker that is part of the Hyundai Motor Group. The automaker offers two electric vehicles in its lineup, the GV60 (midsize SUV) and the Electrified G80 (midsize sedan). However, with plenty of focus on fully-electric cars, Genesis has announced no plans for PHEVs.

7. GMC

GMC is known for its tough and rugged trucks and SUVs. Despite having a rich history in the automotive industry, the automaker does not offer any PHEVs in its lineup. However, the automaker is currently focusing on its all-new GMC Sierra Denali EV. The electric Sierra will join the GMC Hummer EV SUV in 2024.

8. Infiniti

Infiniti, the luxury division of Nissan, does not sell any plug-in hybrids in the United States. However, before exiting the Europe market in 2019, Infiniti offered PHEV variants of the Q50, Q60, and Q70. The PHEVs were only available in Europe and Asia, and there are currently no plans to provide them in other markets. Instead, Infiniti focuses on its all-new QX Inspiration concept, which previews the automaker’s future direction.

9. Lotus

The British automaker Lotus is known for its lightweight and performance-oriented cars. Although the automaker does not offer any PHEVs, it does have an all-electric SUV in the works. The Lotus Eletre is an all-electric SUV scheduled to be released in 2023.

10. Maserati

For an automaker known for its luxury and performance cars, Maserati does not offer any PHEVs in its lineup. The automaker does have a hybrid SUV, the Grecale, but it is not a PHEV. Instead, Maserati is focusing on its all-new MC20 supercar, which is set to be released in 2022.

11. Rivian

Since Rivian is an all-electric automaker, it does not offer any PHEVs in its lineup. Under its lineup of electric vehicles, we have the R1T (pickup truck), R1S (SUV), and R1L (van). There are plans to offer the all-electric Rivian R2 (sedan) and R3 (crossover SUV).

12. Tesla

Like Rivian, all of Tesla’s vehicles are all-electric, so the automaker does not offer any PHEVs. Tesla offers a wide range of electric cars, including the Model 3 (compact sedan), Model S (full-size sedan), Model Y (compact SUV), and Model X (midsize SUV). The automaker is also planning to release an all-electric Semi truck and Roadster in the near future.
