Expect impressive range figures backed by performance figures normally relegated to supercars.
LucidAfter capturing the industry’s EV range record with its Air sedan, Saudi-backed Lucid is taking aim at the ever-important SUV segment. Of course, we already knew that, as spy images of a camouflage-free SUV prototype spilled onto the internet back in August of 2020. More than two years later, the automaker is finally ready to share some official images of the upcoming Lucid Gravity SUV, though specific details remain scarce at this time.
The Lucid Gravity SUV is poised to join the Air sedan lineup, promising to bring their sporting character and impressive range to the SUV market. With seating for up to seven passengers thanks to two- and three-row variants, the Gravity is aimed right at the heart of the luxury family hauler segment. It is worth noting that Lucid has confirmed that it is still finalizing the design and overall specifications of the SUV at this time. What changes will be made to the design of the Gravity remain to be seen, but it does carry a striking resemblance to the early prototype captured in photos back in 2020. The SUV clearly takes notes from the Air sedan, maintaining a similarly simple yet striking design. The short front overhang helps to give the SUV an athletic stance, while the rear does its best impression of a Range Rover from the future. The lighting elements on either end mirror those found on the Air as well, not unlike what Tesla has done with its own lineup.

While there hasn’t been a ton of mystery surrounding what the Gravity was going to look like, there are still some interesting bits of design to examine. For example, it appears the roof makes extensive use of glass panels, as demonstrated by the interior shots. There are only a few bits of structure obscuring your view out of the top of the SUV. That should help to make the interior of the SUV more airy and open. The glass roof has also forced Lucid remove some antennas from the top of the SUV, which helps give it a more sleek appearance than the early prototype.
Lucid
Lucid isn’t quite ready to share any technical specifications with the public yet, but it does state that the Gravity should provide supercar levels of performance. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, as it is currently expected that the Gravity will employ the same electric powertrain configurations as the Air Sedan. That means a possible single, dual, or tri-motor setup bolstered by an 88-kWh or 118-kWh battery pack. Output of the Air ranges from 480 hp in the rear-drive Air Pure on up to more than 1200 hp in the tri-motor Air Sapphire model. Lucid expects the Gravity to outperform every EV that isn’t in the company’s own stable as far as range is concerned. Considering the Tesla Model X SUV provides 348 miles of range, expect the Gravity to get closer to 400 miles on a charge.
The Gravity SUV is slated to be built at Lucid’s AMP-1 factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, though the truck isn’t expected to land until sometime in 2024 for North American customers. That’s still quite a ways away, but the automaker is aiming to open reservation books sometime in 2023. For now we’ll have to wait until more specific details about this new EV SUV challenger.
