GMC has released another teaser shot of its all-new 2023 Canyon midsize pickup truck, which will be officially revealed on August 11, 2022. The new photo shows the passenger side of the Canyon AT4X Edition 1, and a GIF shows a camoflaged mule climbing over some rocks.
It will be the first Canyon with an AT4X trim, which was introduced on the 2022 GMC Sierra full-size pickup as a more capable and premium version of the AT4 off-road sub-brand.
The teaser shots show the truck with a wider stance, increased ground clearance, and beadlock-capable wheels. The truck was photographed at Moab, Utah, where its off-road capability was tested during development.

We’ve already seen the all-new 2023 Chevrolet Colorado, and since the two have always been mechanical twins, we expect the GMC to share the Chevy’s chassis and powertrain development.
If it does, then the new Canyon will come only in extended-cab configuration with a 5-foot-2 bed, and with 79 mm (3.1 inches) added to the wheelbase. The front overhang is shorter for improved off-road angles. The current Canyon’s three engines – 2.5L four-cylinder, 3.6L V6, and 2.8L turbodiesel – will be retired in favour of a turbocharged 2.7L four-cylinder.
In the Colorado, that 2.5L will come in three power versions, with the high-output producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. That one goes into the ZR2 off-road package – which can be further optioned with a Desert Boss package for off-road racers – and so we expect the Canyon AT4X will likely have the high-output powerplant between its frame rails as well.
The 2.5L includes active fuel management for improved economy, and in the Canyon, the various power versions provide a maximum towing capacity between 3,500 and 7,700 lbs.
Other improvements on the Colorado, which will no doubt carry over to the Canyon, include a bed with stake pockets, in-bed pockets, and front grooves for motorcycle and bicycle tires; and an available locking storage compartment inside the tailgate.
The interior also gets a makeover in the Chevy, with new 11.3-inch infotainment screen and a number of driver-assist safety technologies missing on the current truck. We’ll be looking at the all-new Canyon in person shortly and will report back when the truck is officially revealed.
