INDIANAPOLIS — NTT IndyCar Series driver Josef Newgarden has been cleared to participate in Friday’s practice session for this weekend’s Gallagher Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Newgarden, who has been treated for symptoms of a head injury following a crash during Sunday’s Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300 at Iowa Speedway, was evaluated by IndyCar Medical Director Dr. Geoffrey Billows on Thursday afternoon and cleared to drive the No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet on Friday.
Following Friday’s practice on the IMS road course, Newgarden will be re-evaluated to determine if he’s cleared to resume all racing activities for the remainder of the Gallagher Grand Prix event.
Newgarden was cleared following his crash on Sunday, but later fainted and suffered a gash on his head, resulting in a trip to Mercy One Des Moines Medical Center, where he was kept overnight for observation and released on Monday morning.
Newgarden is a four-time winner in the series this season.
