Four vehicles were damaged and one person mildly injured on Friday when an alleged car thief made off with a Lexus SUV and crashed it into multiple vehicles before being arrested by police.
Durham Police were called to investigate a “suspicious vehicle” in a plaza near Taunton Road East and Harmony Road North in Oshawa on June 24. Officers identified the Lexus SUV, confirming it had indeed been stolen from the area earlier that day, and attempted to stop the driver near Baldwin Street North and Highway 407 to no avail.
As is often the case in these types of pursuits, police pulled back from the chase when the suspect began “driving erratically.” The wild driving continued into north Whitby where the SUV first made contact with a Dodge Caravan near Winchester Road East and Baldwin Street North and then collided with an Audi AQ5 and then a GMC Terrain. Two of the vehicles were unoccupied at the time, but an occupant in the Caravan was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“The stolen vehicle sustained serious damage from the collisions and the suspect fled from the vehicle,” a Durham Police release details. “With the assistance of the K-9 Unit, the suspect was arrested in a wooded area.”
