“Top Gun: Maverick” star Tom Cruise had an accident on the island of Lanai. He was visiting the exclusive Hawaiian island owned by Oracle founder Larry Ellison. While blasting around the island in Ellison’s Toyota Land Cruiser, he flipped the SUV, leaving it totaled.

Billionaire Ellison bought the island in 2012 for a cool $300 million. Cruise visited the island not long after its purchase. But the news of Cruise’s accident has only surfaced now after a tell-all about the goings-on on Lanai by Bloomberg. It claims that Ellison and the “super-rich” are pushing native islanders off of Lanai.
The island is becoming more exclusive by the day as prices soar and the wealthy flock to it. Lanai is about 90,000 acres and has just under 3,000 residents. It has two Four Seasons resorts, and an exclusive Nobu restaurant, along with other commercial buildings and businesses.

Bloomberg confirmed with a number of residents about the Cruise accident. Because most of the roads on Lanai are unpaved, it makes navigating the island more risky. A local land and management company, also owned by Ellison, cleaned up and recycled the wreckage.
There were no police reports filed. That’s because no one was injured in the Land Cruiser accident, and Lanai is considered private property. Ellison owned the totaled Land Cruiser and the tow truck that hauled it away. So, “nothing to see here folks, move along.” Those that talked to Bloomberg reporters did so by requesting anonymity.
The Lanai Four Seasons, the Maui Police Department, which has jurisdiction over the island, along with representatives for both Ellison and Cruise, did not respond to requests for comments. Since Ellison’s purchase of Lanai, controversy has followed. Supposedly, he is slowly transforming it into a “wellness utopia” for the rich.

But with the island’s slow transformation, reports about families allegedly forced to leave are making headlines. Some have lived in Lanai for generations. That was part of the gist of the article. To explore some of the changes to the island and its native families.
Because Ellison owns the car rental company, the Land Cruiser belongs to him. And because of the secrecy surrounding things that might or might not have happened there, it is not surprising that it took 10 years for the Land Cruiser accident to pop up.
At the time that Cruise was there, a couple of employees of the Four Seasons hotel were allegedly suspended for letting slip that Cruise was visiting the island. And because of the image that Cruise wants to convey, the idea that he couldn’t keep an SUV on a dirt road without crashing it doesn’t align with that.
