Now gets the 6.2L V8 engine option
Believe it or not, the most hardcore of Silverados in the 2019 model year – the Trail Boss – wasn’t available with the line-ups biggest motor, a 6.2L V8. You could have it with a 5.3L V8 or 4.3L V6, but that was it.
That will all change for 2020, however, as the Trail Boss now gets that engine option, as well as over half of the available Silverado trims (WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country). It’s good for 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque and is paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. In practice, what this translates to is the best towing capacity in the segment (6,078 kg), according to Chevrolet. If you want even more power from your 6.2, you can spec a Performance Upgrade Package that provides 435 hp and 469 lb-ft of torque. That’s a lot of hauling power.
If efficiency is more what you’re after, then at the other end of the Silverado spectrum stands a new 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel. Available on LT, RST, LTZ and High Country models, it’s good for 277 hp and 460 lb-ft, more power and torque than what’s made by the Ford F-150 Diesel. You can also spec a smaller, 2.7L V6 turbo on Custom trims.
In addition to towing more, the 2020 Silverado 1500 has borrowed some tech from the 2020 Silverado HD to make towing easier on drivers. There are a class-leading 15 cameras on-hand to help drivers better line-up their trailer; this includes a camera that can be mounted to the back of a trailer, so you can get a better look at where it’s headed while backing up.
The final big addition for 2020 is adaptive cruse control – though you pretty much knew that was on its way, what with pretty much every other manufacturer offering it not just on trucks, but on a large percentage of their various line-ups.
