Following in the footsteps of the X9, the Xpeng G6 has received a PowerX variant in China, adding a range extender to the Tesla Model Y-baiting electric SUV. As per its MPV stablemate, the car gains a 1.5 litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine under its pert bonnet. The ICE serves solely as a generator, charging the slightly smaller 55.8 kWh LFP battery at 85 kW. The car continues to be powered solely by a single rear electric motor making 296 PS (218 kW) and 450 Nm of torque, getting it from zero to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds – three tenths of a second slower than the regular EV version. Xpeng claims a pure EV range of 450 km on China’s exceedingly lenient CLTC cycle, leading to a total range of 1,704 km. Fuel consumption is rated at 2.24 litres per 100 km, and even with the battery run down, the PowerX can still do 5.9 litres per 100 km. The G6 PowerX continues to utilise an 800-volt electrical architecture, with a claimed 5C DC fast charging speed (five times the battery capacity in kW), so expect around 280 kW. As such, the battery charges from 10 to 80% in the same 12 minutes as its EV counterpart, which can charge at up to 451 kW. Aside from the rejigged powertrain, the G6 PowerX also gains new adaptive dampers supported by AI-driven chassis control, along with reworked hydraulic bushings. The rest of the car remains identical to the EV version, with only a more open grille and a fuel filler door being the only visible changes. You still get the same design tweaks as last year’s facelift, including a new full-width front light bar, fully body-coloured wheel arches, a rear deck spoiler and new wheel designs. The interior again takes after the facelift, with a redesigned dashboard and door cards and extended ambient lighting. The tech includes a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, plus twin 50-watt Qi wireless chargers and an 18-speaker Xopera sound system. Xpeng also says the PowerX is the only REEV in its class to offer active noise cancellation. Last but not least, the G6 PowerX receives three of Xpeng’s latest Turing AI chip to power its driver assists, with an effective computing power of 2,250 TOPs. This enables the inclusion of the company’s second-generation visual-language-action (VLA) model for improved highly automated driving, with Level 4 autonomy aimed to be achieved within “one to three years.” The G6 PowerX is on sale in China now, offered in a single variant priced at 186,800 yuan (RM107,400). With more of the world moving away from full electrification, we could very well see PowerX versions of the G6 and X9 being made available in other markets. Perhaps in Malaysia, too?
