If you spend any time on American highways, boulevards, and avenues, you’ve noticed that the American buyer tends to gravitate toward certain vehicle types more so than others. And gravitate is right — U.S. buyers have a penchant for big vehicles. Trucks and SUVs — often big ones — are the most popular thing you'll find on roads from sea to shining sea.Don’t believe it? The Ford F-150, Honda CR-V, and Ford Explorer are regular fixtures on the list of the country's best-selling vehicles. But not every truck and SUV enjoys that sort of popularity. Even SUVs that tick nearly every box (if not every box) for the typical American family are often overlooked in a market teeming with competition. That’s certainly the case for this domestic three-row SUV. America Loves Its SUVs Ford In 2024, U.S. car buyers bought approximately 479,000 Toyota RAV4s. That’s 163,103 more than the number of Camry sedans the brand sold. And the Camry was the best-selling sedan in the country. The Toyota Camry was also hopeless to outsell the Honda CR-V and Chevrolet Equinox. See? America loves its SUVs. The same goes for larger SUVs. Stateside buyers took home significant numbers of Ford Explorers in 2025. And even with fuel economy figures typically below that of a comparable sedan, there are reasons for the SUV fandom among star-spangled shoppers. Fit For A Family GMC There is some method behind the madness of SUV popularity, believe you me. For starters, SUVs almost always provide more cargo space than comparable sedans. Also, with higher ground clearances, readily available all-wheel drive, and more mass, American buyers often associate SUVs with better off-road performance, handling in inclement weather, and crash protection. Then, of course, the prospect of three rows, something you won’t find in smaller vehicles. Seating for up to eight is something some American buyers, especially family-focused ones, may value over the drivability of a lighter, more nimble sedan. And one oft-overlooked GMC SUV meets many of the family-friendly criteria you want in a school run-maker, pet taxi, and weekend sports runabout. 2026 GMC Acadia: Dependable, Safe, Spacious Starting At $45,795 GMC The GMC Acadia returns for 2026 without much of an update from the 2025 model, aside from installing the Denali Ultimate as the top-trim option. There are also a couple of new colors in the mix: Riverstone Metallic and Glacier White Tricoat. That said, the Acadia is still relatively fresh from its 2024 update. As for engine options, the 2026 Acadia has but one: a 328-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter inline four. Shifting duties are handled by an eight-speed automatic transmission, and buyers get a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The third-generation GMC SUV grew in comparison to the second-generation model, adding length, width, and height. And, for a three-row mid-size SUV, the extra space means enough room for hockey sticks, school runs, and anything else a family can throw at it. Three Rows For Everyone GMC The Acadia shares a three-row General Motors C1 platform with the Chevrolet Traverse and the posher Buick Enclave. The Acadia may get lost in that GM sandwich. But that doesn’t mean the GMC SUV isn’t a spacious place for a full-size family. In addition to the comfortable driver and passenger seats up front, the 2026 model gets bench seating for the second and third rows. If you’re comfortable getting cozy, the Acadia will seat eight. Go for the off-road-inspired AT4 or luxe Denali trims, and that second row turns into a set of captain’s chairs and seating for seven. The cabin is a noticeable upgrade over the second-generation model's rather cheap interior, which had more of a plasticized, artificial look to it. All plastic surgery jests aside, the 2026 GMC Acadia’s cabin is adorned with premium materials, plenty of interior storage, and a 15-inch infotainment screen. Plenty Of Everyday Cargo Space GMC It’s no surprise that, in a country where the Chevrolet Suburban and the hulking GMC Hummer EV can roam the streets without knocking down buildings à la Godzilla, three-row SUVs with cavernous cargo capacities would be right at home. The more space, the better. And the Acadia took that to heart when it grew between generations. The extra dimensions mean more cargo space than the previous Acadia generation. A lot more. How much more? The 2026 GMC Acadia boasts 23 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Fold that third row, and you’ll free up enough space for 57.3 cubic feet of storage. That’s up from 12.8 cubic feet with the third row intact and 41.7 cubic feet with that row stowed in the previous version. 2026 GMC Acadia Trim Level Pricing 5-Star Safety, Average Reliability GMC As far as safety goes, the 2026 GMC Acadia gets a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That overall safety rating includes individual five-star crashworthiness ratings in frontal and side crash testing, as well as a four-star rollover resistance rating. The Acadia was also a 2025 Top Safety Pick awardee from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The same can’t be said, however, of the Acadia’s reliability ratings.J.D. Power assesses the overall quality and reliability of vehicles using owner reports of defects, design flaws, malfunctions, and issues. Taking those factors into account, the Acadia scored a 76 out of 100 in overall quality and reliability. That puts the Acadia squarely in the “Average” range. Interestingly enough, the Chevrolet Traverse, a close sibling of the Acadia, received an 83 out of 100, placing it in the “Great” range. It’s also not quite up to the standards of the Honda Pilot, which snagged a rating of 81 out of 100. A Stocked Safety Suite GMC For 2026, the GMC Acadia comes well-equipped with standard safety technology. The NHTSA recommends many of the GMC Acadia’s standard safety technology features: lane departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, forward collision warning, and dynamic brake support. In addition to those features, the Acadia offers several other safety-focused driver aids, like automatic high-beam headlights and automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection. So, Should You Buy One? GMC For a big family, the 2026 GMC Acadia ticks boxes and meets needs. After the new generation rolled out for the 2024 model year, the Acadia got bigger, more comfortable, more refined, and more spacious. And, at the Denali trims, the Acadia is a surprisingly upscale affair. Here’s the thing, though: other than the extra cachet of a GMC badge over a Chevrolet one, the Acadia doesn’t do much to distinguish itself over the more affordable Chevrolet Traverse as a family hauler.Sources: General Motors, Edmunds, iSeeCars, Kelley Blue Book, J.D.
