The R2 designer SUV set to become Rivian’s first model for Europedpa internationalDPAMon, September 14, 2026 at 11:18 AM UTCAdd us on GoogleWith a clean design and striking oval headlights, the Rivian R2, a 4.72-metre SUV, is set to take on the Tesla Model Y and its rivals. Rivian/dpaUS electric vehicle start-up Rivian has launched its R2 SUV in the United States and is raising the prospect of exporting it to Europe as early as 2028, the company says. The R2 is positioned as a direct rival to mid-size electric SUVs such as the BMW iX3, the Mercedes GLC, the Volvo EX60 and above all the Tesla Model Y.Unlike Rivian's debut model, the R1 - a pick-up and rugged truck designed primarily for US tastes and at more than five metres long simply too large for European roads - the new R2 SUV is sized for the European market.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe R2 measures 4.72 metres in length and currently starts at $58,000 in the US (or around €50,000), according to Rivian. Stripped-down variants with a single motor instead of two and a smaller battery are planned for a later date, with entry-level prices set to come in well below $40,000.The launch version, however, is a performance model. Powered by two electric motors producing a combined 482 kW (656 hp), it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in well under four seconds - faster than many sports cars. Top speed is limited to around 200 km/h.An 87.9 kWh battery provides the energy, with a range of around 550 kilometres on the US cycle, depending on the variant. To stand out in the crowded mid-size SUV segment, Rivian has given the R2 an adventure-oriented identity and packed it with clever details. The key doubles as a carabiner, a permanently charged torch is built into the door, and the menu offers around half a dozen driving modes for sand, snow and gravel.
