Rivian is developing a Teen Mode and a separate Valet Mode for its vehicles, Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid said, giving owners a way to rein in the performance of EVs that weigh 5,000 to 7,000 pounds and can hit 60 mph in as little as 2.5 seconds. The system will build on Rivian's digital key integration and what Bensaid called a new user profile architecture. Owners will assign profiles to individual drivers, flagging some as teen profiles and leaving others unrestricted. "You as an owner can associate and say my first kid, this is a teen profile, my second kid is not a teen profile," Bensaid said, letting parents account for different ages and maturity levels. When a driver registers through the app and enters their age, the app behaves accordingly. "When the kids register, if they put their true age, the app will behave in that case in teen mode," Bensaid explained.Rather than offering a freeform horsepower slider, Rivian will present categories of limits. One category limits horsepower, while others cover whether stability control can be disabled and whether off-road modes are accessible. He said owners will configure five to ten settings in a generic way. The interface will resemble Rivian's RAD Tuner, with on-screen sliders and toggles. The restrictions are tied to the digital key and protected by a password. "The physical key and the keycard will not have access to defaults," Bensaid said, noting owners can tie a given profile to a particular key card or fob so a young driver cannot bypass the settings.Valet Mode will operate separately. "We will give you the optionality to lock some of the closures, don't allow access to the front trunk, don't allow access to the gloveboxes," Bensaid said.Bensaid said Rivian held the feature back to get it right. Both modes are expected to arrive in early 2027 on the R1T, R1S, and R2.
