Here’s How to Lease the New 2027 Rivian R2, and How Much You’ll PayMotorTrendEdward LohMon, September 14, 2026 at 11:00 AM UTCAdd us on GoogleHere's How to Lease the New 2027 Rivian R2william walker - MotorTrendThe numbers are in and you guys love the Rivian R2. How do we know? Because our recent comparison test of the Rivian R2 vs. rivals from Ford, Hyundai, and Tesla drove a ton of traffic and social shares. Clearly you and other electric midsize SUV shoppers are interested in Rivian's new off-road capable two-row model. But perhaps instead of buying one outright, you're interested in a lease. What does that look like? Let's dive in.R2 Quick ReviewThe 2027 Rivian R2 is a new model from American EV manufacturer Rivian. It's a two-row, 5-seat, dual-motor, all-wheel-drive electric SUV, with 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, with an EPA-estimated range of 330 miles (although in our testing, we found it fell well short of that mark). The R2 is expected to come in three trims, Performance, Premium, and Standard, but only the top-end Performance trim is currently available at a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $57,990. This doesn't include a destination fee of $1,495, other delivery fees, or taxes. How To Lease a RivianLike Tesla, Rivian does not have a traditional dealer network and instead sells direct to consumers, primarily through its website and mobile phone app. To browse the purchase and lease options for a Rivian R2, click this link to their configurator.AdvertisementAdvertisementOnce on Rivian's site, point your mouse to the upper right-hand corner, above the three trim levels. There you should see the MSRP to buy and estimated lease per month, next to a calculator icon and the underlined words: calculate lease/loan. Clicking the underlined words opens up a window with some buttons and drop-down menus.william walker - MotorTrendUnder the lease button, you can select from 24 or 36 months, choose annual mileages of 10,000, 12,000, or 15,000, and select a credit score from three options: Excellent (740+), Very Good (700–739), and Good (680–699). Below that, there's a space to enter your desired down payment or leave the default of $3,500. After that, there are two final sliders; one allows you to apply the estimated value of a vehicle you might be trading in, while the other allows you to see the estimated taxes and fees for your zip code.Running the R2 Lease NumbersTo see how much the lowest lease would cost, we selected the only model available, a Rivian R2 Performance, and made sure it didn't have any extra-cost options. As the vehicle just made its debut, it's currently only sold with a Launch Package that includes Rivian's Autonomy+ advanced driver assistance system, a tow package, and launch key fob—all at no cost. With a standard paint option (in our case Esker silver), standard 21-inch wheels, and standard black interior, we incurred no additional charges. With a destination fee of $1,495, our total was $59,485, which does not include taxes and other fees.To find the lowest month lease, we selected the longest term available, 36 months, along with the lowest annual mileage, 10,000, the highest credit score, Excellent (740+), and the default down payment of $3,500. Per Rivian's calculations, this would equate to $829 a month over the 36-month term, with an estimated $5,024 due when signing the lease. Included in the $5,024 is the $3,500 down payment, a $695 acquisition fee (which Rivian explains is a fee for activating and managing the lease), and the first month's lease payment of $829.william walker - MotorTrendBut let's say you don't have good credit, drive more than 10,000 miles a year, and don't have extra cash lying around. How much does the cost per month increase? For the same 36-month term, but with a cap of 15,000 annual miles, "Good" credit (680–699), and no money down, the lease for a Rivian R2 Performance jumps to $1,012 per month, with $1,707 due at signing.Other Factors to Consider When Leasing an R2Note that both of these estimates are conservative because they did not include taxes. Unless you live in a state with no sales tax, your monthly lease will likely be more.AdvertisementAdvertisementOne way to lower the cost of any new car purchase is to trade in a used vehicle at the time of purchase or lease. Rivian's configurator has a "slider" for that which sends you to a page to estimate the value of your used vehicle and then applies it to the lease estimate.California's MyFirstEV IncentiveIf you live in California and are looking to buy or lease your first electric (or hydrogen-powered) vehicle, you may also be eligible for up to $3,500 off, thanks to the "MyFirstEV" incentive program by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Those looking at Rivian as their first EV should pay particular attention; because Rivian is headquartered in California (Irvine), there is no MSRP price cap for the incentive. For EV or hydrogen car makers with head offices outside of California, the maximum MSRP of the new vehicle may not exceed $50,000 to qualify for the $3,500 incentive. For more details visit CARB's MyFirstEV website.New, More Affordable R2s ComingIf a monthly lease over $800 is out of your price range, fear not. As we've outlined, the only R2 currently available to purchase or lease is the $57,990 top-of-range Performance trim. Per Rivian's shopping site, coming later this year will be the R2 Premium at $53,990. In the spring of 2027, Rivian says there will be an R2 Standard available for $44,990. Both of those models should lower the monthly lease cost by potentially hundreds of dollars.
